FuelCell Energy, Inc. and Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Sdn Bhd (MMHE), a subsidiary of Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Berhad, have entered into a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to co-develop large-scale hydrogen production systems and technologies across Asia, New Zealand, and Australia. This collaboration builds on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in February 2023 and represents a crucial milestone for both companies in their shared mission to make clean hydrogen production more accessible and viable. The partnership emphasizes their commitment to advancing green energy solutions and contributing to global decarbonization efforts.

The JDA combines FuelCell Energy's advanced solid oxide electrolyzer cell (SOEC) technology with MMHE's extensive expertise in large-scale fabrication. The two companies aim to develop modular solutions that facilitate the rapid deployment of commercial hydrogen production facilities, which is key to achieving sustainable energy transition goals.

Detailed Feasibility Study Awarded for Low-Carbon Fuel Production Facility in Malaysia

As part of their collaboration, FuelCell Energy and MMHE are working together on a project that was awarded to FuelCell Energy for a Detailed Feasibility Study (DFS) of a low-carbon fuel production facility in Malaysia. This feasibility study will explore the potential of producing low-carbon fuels using SOEC technology, which utilizes carbon dioxide and water as feedstocks.

To support the DFS, the companies will also collaborate with KBR LLC, which will contribute its proprietary low-carbon fuel synthesis technology. This partnership aligns with Malaysia’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 while advancing the country’s national hydrogen value chain.

Leadership Statements on the Collaboration

FuelCell Energy President and CEO, Jason Few, expressed, “Our collaboration with MMHE marks a significant step forward in establishing our position in the hydrogen and low-carbon fuels market. It demonstrates our ability to scale up for large-scale projects through strategic collaborations across diverse industries and regions."

Mohd Nazir Mohd Nor, Managing Director and CEO of MMHE, added, “We are excited to continue our partnership with FuelCell Energy as we work towards developing the hydrogen value chain in Malaysia. This collaboration builds on our previous efforts and highlights our readiness to take on larger-scale projects."

He further stated, “By combining MHB’s extensive fabrication capabilities with FuelCell Energy’s innovative SOEC technology, we aim to deliver scalable solutions that will drive significant progress in the energy transition and help create a cleaner, low-carbon future."

This partnership marks a significant advancement in the development of hydrogen production technologies and showcases the growing global interest in low-carbon fuels and sustainable energy solutions.
