Fuel Tech, Inc., a leading provider of emissions control and water treatment technologies, has announced new air pollution control (APC) orders from existing customers in the United States and Japan. The contracts, valued at approximately $2.6 million, reinforce Fuel Tech’s role in supporting cleaner industrial and utility operations.

One of the contracts was awarded in Japan for the company’s ULTRA® system, which will be installed at a natural gas-fired Combined Cycle utility plant in the Pacific Rim. This plant is undergoing a retrofit with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Fuel Tech’s ULTRA process enables the safe and cost-effective on-site conversion of urea to ammonia, eliminating risks associated with transporting, storing, and handling anhydrous or aqueous ammonia. This contract marks the fourth ULTRA unit ordered from Fuel Tech as part of a continuing partnership that began in 2017.

The new unit will incorporate Fuel Tech’s ULTRA-EX™ approach, which utilizes high-temperature exhaust gas from the combustion turbine in the ULTRA process. This method extracts flue gas to thermally decompose concentrated urea solution into ammonia within the ULTRA chamber. By leveraging ULTRA-EX, the process achieves greater energy efficiency while minimizing external heat input required for ammonia generation, which is then used in the SCR system. Engineering for this project is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2025, with equipment delivery scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.

Fuel Tech also received a domestic contract from a long-standing municipal waste unit customer in the Northeast. This order is for advanced engineering services as a preliminary step toward implementing an Advanced Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction (ASNCR) system. ASNCR is a proven solution designed to help industrial combustion units comply with stricter NOx control regulations. The work associated with this contract is scheduled for completion by the second quarter of 2025.

Vincent J. Arnone, President and Chief Executive Officer of Fuel Tech, expressed confidence in the company’s continued growth, stating: “We are pleased to announce these new contract awards, which highlight our ability to serve a broad spectrum of utility and industrial customers. These orders represent a portion of the $4 to $5 million in near-term contracts we anticipated securing by early in the second quarter. We remain actively engaged in pursuing additional APC contracts that are expected to be awarded in the coming months.”

These contracts further demonstrate Fuel Tech’s expertise in emissions control solutions and its commitment to advancing cleaner energy and industrial processes worldwide.
