Formula 1 has unveiled a significant step towards its Net Zero 2030 commitment, announcing a new partnership with Qatar Airways to invest in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This strategic move builds upon the previously established collaboration with DHL and aims to further reduce the sport's carbon footprint.

The combined investment in both programs for the 2024 season is projected to cut related emissions by over 8,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. This represents a substantial 19% reduction in emissions compared to traditional aviation fuel for Formula 1's air freight charter program across flyaway events.

Ellen Jones, Head of ESG at Formula 1, emphasized the importance of this initiative and said, “Today’s investment is the next step in our alternative fuels strategy which is central to delivering our Net Zero 2030 target. Through collaboration with our Teams, the FIA and our partners, we are delivering on our promises to drive down the sports’ carbon emissions and drive forward technologies that can have an impact beyond Formula 1. This is the latest example of how stakeholders across the sport are aligned with our vision for a more sustainable F1, which we are thrilled to see."

This partnership aligns with Formula 1's broader sustainability efforts, which extend beyond air travel. The sport has introduced 100% advanced sustainable fuel for its race cars starting from 2026, while Formula 2 and Formula 3 will transition to this standard by next season. Additionally, the FIA Safety and Medical cars currently utilize 40% advanced sustainable fuel.

Off the track, Formula 1 has implemented various measures to reduce its environmental impact. European Grands Prix have been powered by biofuel-powered trucks since 2023, and starting next season, key operational areas at all European events will utilize lower-carbon solutions provided by Aggreko, resulting in over 90% emissions reduction. Globally, events across the calendar are increasingly adopting alternative energy solutions, such as biofuels, green tariffs, and on-site renewables.

Qatar Airways, as the inaugural member of Formula 1's SAF program, is also committed to sustainability. The airline has made substantial investments in SAF and recently completed an additional purchase that will reduce emissions by 19,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. This partnership underscores Qatar Airways' dedication to advancing the use of SAF on a commercial scale.

The collaboration between Formula 1 and Qatar Airways signifies a significant milestone in the sport's sustainability journey. By investing in SAF and adopting various eco-friendly practices, Formula 1 aims to set an example for the industry and demonstrate that high-performance motorsport can coexist with environmental responsibility.
