On October 21, 2024, Evergy, Inc. announced plans to invest in two new 705 megawatt (MW) combined-cycle natural gas plants in Kansas, expected to begin operations in 2029 and 2030. These plants are part of Evergy’s strategy to meet the growing electricity demand driven by the region's economic expansion. David Campbell, Evergy’s Chairman, President, and CEO, highlighted that these high-efficiency natural gas plants will not only support the economy but also create well-paying jobs and generate significant tax revenue for Kansas. “Dispatchable natural gas is crucial to our diverse energy portfolio,” Campbell said, noting that the plants will complement Evergy’s ongoing investments in wind and solar resources while maintaining their commitment to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy.
The new plants will be built in Sumner County and Reno County, with the Sumner facility set to begin operation in 2029, followed by the Reno facility in 2030. These natural gas plants will provide flexible generation capacity, pairing well with the renewable energy potential in the region, and will adhere to strict emissions standards.
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly praised the project, emphasizing its importance to the state’s growing economy. “Evergy’s multi-billion dollar investment brings significant benefits to the Hutchinson and Sumner County areas, not only through jobs and tax dollars but by supporting broader business growth,” she said. Kelly highlighted that Kansas’ ability to attract new businesses depends on reliable and sustainable energy, which these plants will help ensure.
The investment is expected to serve customers for the next 40 years, with each plant creating more than 500 construction jobs and 20 to 40 permanent skilled positions once operational. After a 10-year tax exemption, the plants will generate over $500 million in property tax revenue during their lifespan.
Evergy’s plans align with Kansas' recent legislative efforts to enhance electric infrastructure policies, allowing the state to compete more effectively for business investments. Speaker of the House Dan Hawkins expressed satisfaction that the legislation is fostering a strong energy future for Kansas. Senate President Ty Masterson added that Evergy’s investment ensures reliable electricity, which is essential for Kansans' daily lives and businesses.
Earlier in 2024, Evergy submitted a 20-year plan to the Kansas Corporation Commission and the Missouri Public Service Commission, which included the construction of these new plants. The plan is designed to accommodate future energy demand and manage the transition from older plants to newer, more efficient facilities, ensuring long-term energy security for customers.
