Eramet and Electricite de Strasbourg (ES) have initiated a new phase in their exploration of lithium extraction from geothermal waters in eastern France. Following successful lithium findings in recent years, the partners are set to run a pilot program for at least six months at ES's Rittershoffen power plant, situated near Germany. The primary objective is to evaluate the consistency of Eramet's direct extraction technology for lithium in the specific geothermal conditions of the region, as outlined in their joint statement released on Tuesday.

The collaborative efforts of Eramet and ES aim to develop a sustainable and efficient production process for the battery mineral lithium, anticipating its increased demand in the coming decade. The pilot program serves as a crucial step in assessing the viability of Eramet's lithium extraction technology within the local geothermal landscape.

Having already obtained lithium through exploration activities in recent years, the partners are strategically advancing their understanding of the extraction process. By conducting the pilot at ES's Rittershoffen power plant, they seek to validate the performance and reliability of Eramet's technology in real-world conditions. This experimental phase is essential for fine-tuning the extraction process and ensuring its effectiveness in the specific geothermal context of eastern France.

Eramet, having developed its lithium extraction process for the Centenario deposit in Argentina, is poised to leverage its expertise in this collaboration with ES. The joint venture in Argentina, involving Chinese steel group Tsingshan, anticipates commencing lithium production in the second quarter of the upcoming year.

The potential of lithium extraction from geothermal waters in the Rhine Valley, along the French-German border, has attracted significant investments. This region, known for both renewable energy initiatives and promising lithium resources, aligns with Europe's broader strategy to secure access to essential battery minerals. The dual focus on renewable energy and lithium resources reflects the region's commitment to sustainable and responsible practices, aligning with the global shift towards electric mobility and renewable energy sources.

Eramet and ES envision the capability to produce 10,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate annually by the end of the decade. This production volume is expected to cater to the growing demand for lithium in the electric vehicle sector, supplying approximately 250,000 electric vehicle batteries. The partners are strategically positioned to contribute significantly to the evolving landscape of battery mineral production.

A crucial milestone in this collaborative venture is the final investment decision, which is slated to be made by the end of 2026. This decision will mark a pivotal moment in the progression of the project, signifying a commitment to full-scale production based on the outcomes of the pilot program and the evolving market dynamics for battery minerals.
