In 2024, Equinor's Troll field in the North Sea achieved a historic milestone, producing a record 42.5 billion standard cubic meters of natural gas. This marks the highest annual production for the field, surpassing the previous record of 38.8 billion standard cubic meters set in 2022, reflecting an increase of nearly 10%.
Kjetil Hove, Equinor’s Executive Vice President for Exploration & Production Norway, emphasized that this achievement reinforces the Troll field's crucial role in Europe’s energy security. The field provides a stable gas supply to millions of households and is vital for European industries. Hove credited the record production to decades of focused efforts in efficiently and sustainably recovering the Troll oil and gas resources.
The Troll field, which includes the Troll A platform and the Kollsnes processing plant, has been fully electrified since its start-up in 1996. Gas from the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) is locally sourced, and its production and transport emissions are among the lowest in the industry. In 2024, production at the field reached new heights due to consistent operational performance, with no turnarounds during the year and several efficiency upgrades. The replacement of risers on the Troll B platform also played a key role in maximizing production.
Since its inception, the Troll A platform has been the primary contributor to gas production on the NCS. In 2021, production expanded to include the gas cap in the western part of the reservoir through a major subsea development, further boosting output. The Troll B and C platforms also contribute significant gas volumes, which are transported via Troll A to Kollsnes.
In 2024, partial electrification of both the Troll B and C platforms significantly reduced CO2 emissions. Preliminary estimates indicate a reduction of around 90,000 tonnes, or approximately 15% of emissions, contributing to the field’s sustainability goals. Additionally, the gas processing plant at Kollsnes has undergone major upgrades, increasing its capacity from 144.5 million to 156 million standard cubic meters per day, further supporting the production record.
Helge Haugane, Equinor’s Senior Vice President for Gas and Power Trading, highlighted the importance of these efforts in ensuring long-term energy security for European customers, underscoring how enhanced gas recovery and expanded export capacity contribute to a reliable energy supply in a time of increasing demand.
The Troll field is the largest oil and gas field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), with its 42.5 billion standard cubic meters of gas generating an amount of energy equivalent to roughly three times Norway's annual hydropower production. This gas supply accounts for approximately 11% of the EU's total natural gas consumption. In recent years, multiple oil and gas discoveries have been made in the area surrounding Troll, further enhancing its significance. The field is operated by a consortium of licensees, including Equinor, Petoro, Norske Shell, TotalEnergies, and ConocoPhillips.
