Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) is taking proactive measures to drive the maritime industry's decarbonization initiatives and expedite the adoption of innovative technologies aimed at addressing environmental concerns. By positioning itself at the forefront of these endeavors, EPS aims to set a precedent for more extensive industry-wide adoption.

In line with its unwavering commitment to decarbonization, EPS has forged a groundbreaking partnership with MAN Energy Solutions to develop ammonia-fueled engines. Concurrently, EPS has entered into a series of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with shipbuilders, class societies, designers, and Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority. These agreements collectively seek to advance ammonia-fueled shipping and promote sustainable practices within the maritime sector.

In collaboration with MAN Energy Solutions, EPS aims to finalize the designs for ammonia-fueled engines and seamlessly incorporate them into the fleet of vessels under the company's management. EPS envisions that MAN's ammonia engines will signify a pivotal moment in the maritime industry's journey toward decarbonization. By spearheading the development and deployment of these engines, EPS intends to pave the way for widespread adoption throughout the maritime domain. The ammonia dual-fuel engines are slated for installation in EPS-managed Newcastlemaxes and Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs), with deliveries scheduled to commence in 2026 and beyond.

The signatories of the MoUs encompass EPS, MAN Energy Solutions, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Lloyd's Register, Qingdao Beihai Shipyard, and Jiangnan Shipyard. Qingdao Beihai Shipyard has committed to constructing ammonia-fueled Newcastlemax vessels under EPS's purview, while Jiangnan Shipyard will undertake the construction of EPS-managed ammonia-fueled VLACs.

These recent agreements build upon a previously announced MoU that EPS entered into a year ago, involving collaborative efforts with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and ABS. This initial MoU outlined plans for the construction of a series of mid-to-large gas carriers. Furthermore, EPS has placed orders for Newcastlemax and Very Large Gas Carriers equipped with MAN Energy Solutions ammonia engines through CSSC.

In addition to these industry collaborations, EPS is set to collaborate with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. The authority is actively exploring the viability of using ammonia for international shipping. As the world's largest bunker port, Singapore is diligently researching strategies to mitigate potential risks associated with the application and operation of ammonia-fueled vessels. Simultaneously, it is focused on developing the essential infrastructure required for bunkering and supporting these innovative ships.

EPS is confident that its collective efforts will solidify its position as a trailblazer within the industry and make a substantial contribution to enhancing understanding and utilization of ammonia as a viable long-term alternative fuel for the maritime sector.
