EnBW has launched the marketing process for green ammonia volumes from the SkiGA project in Norway, one of Europe’s first emission-free production facilities. Starting in 2027, the facility is expected to supply 100,000 metric tons of green Ammonia annually. Interested parties are invited to register for access to these sustainable energy resources, reflecting a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting green energy solutions in the market.

Karlsruhe – EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG (EnBW) is taking a significant step toward the decarbonization of industrial processes by launching the marketing of 100,000 metric tons of green ammonia from the Skipavika Green Ammonia (SkiGA) project in western Norway. This makes EnBW one of the first suppliers to bring this eco-friendly product to market. Starting in 2027, the green ammonia will be available for transport to various delivery locations, including the port of Skipavika in Norway, selected terminals in Western Europe, and industrial sites in Germany. Interested companies can register online to bid for the corresponding capacity, marking a pivotal moment for industries looking to reduce their carbon footprint.

By leveraging local green electricity, SkiGA is set to become one of Europe's first emission-free green ammonia production facilities, pioneering climate-friendly production processes in the energy sector and industrial applications. The planned electrolyzer boasts an output of 130 megawatts, significantly enhancing the project's sustainability credentials. This eco-friendly production method can reduce annual carbon emissions by approximately 240,000 metric tons compared to traditional gray ammonia, representing a substantial step forward in reducing industrial carbon footprints and promoting cleaner energy alternatives.

In 2023, EnBW partnered with Norwegian firm FUELLA, acquiring a 10% equity stake to bolster the investment decision and secure exclusive rights to a long-term offtake agreement. The strategic significance of SkiGA was underscored during the first auction by the European Hydrogen Bank, where it was one of only seven projects to receive funding. This collaboration and recognition highlight SkiGA’s competitive edge and its pivotal role in advancing green ammonia production within Europe.

Peter Heydecker, Board Member for Sustainable Generation Infrastructure, emphasized the significance of partnering with FUELLA in Norway. He expressed delight in collaborating with FUELLA, highlighting that this partnership will provide crucial experience in developing and scaling up green gas infrastructure. The secured volumes of green ammonia for EnBW position them advantageously for market expansion and represent a crucial step towards achieving a carbon-free energy supply.

Given the imperative to decarbonize industry and energy production, Germany anticipates a substantial need for imported hydrogen, encompassing both green and low-carbon variants and their derivatives. Recognizing the scale of this demand relative to its own production capacity, EnBW is actively pursuing global opportunities to secure cost-effective and dependable hydrogen sources and partnerships across all hydrogen value chain segments.
