In a groundbreaking collaboration, Wärtsilä has joined forces with Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) to propel the development of EBDG’s Clean Harbor Alternative Mobile Power (CHAMP) Barge design.

This strategic partnership introduces an innovative and cost-effective solution designed to mitigate emissions from large vessels, particularly in scenarios where conventional shore power options are unavailable. The focal point of this collaboration is the integration of Wärtsilä's advanced dual-fuel methanol engine technology into the CHAMP Barge, marking a significant step towards sustainable and cleaner marine power solutions.

The CHAMP Barge, functioning as a floating mobile platform, boasts an impressive power range spanning from 6 to 16 Megawatts, with green methanol serving as its primary energy source. This design enables vessels to engage in cold ironing – the process of connecting to a local power grid – whether they are docked or anchored, offering a substantial operational window of up to two weeks before refueling is necessitated.

One of the distinctive features of the CHAMP Barge is its status as a U.S. Coast Guard inspected vessel. This designation not only ensures compliance with stringent safety and operational standards but also eliminates the need for shoreside permitting or additional infrastructure, streamlining the deployment process. The flexibility of easy repositioning further enhances the adaptability of the CHAMP Barge to suit diverse operational requirements.

Beyond its primary role as a power supply for vessels engaged in cold ironing, the CHAMP Barge serves a dual purpose by functioning as an "in-field" charging station for electric harbor tugs and smaller service vessels. Equipped with a robust 1-megawatt fast charging system and an impressive 10 Megawatt-hours of reserve capacity, the barge facilitates a seamless recharging process within the operational area. This feature eliminates the necessity for extended journeys to and from the dock, thereby reducing operational downtime and minimizing the expenses associated with pier-side charging infrastructure.

The integration of Wärtsilä's dual-fuel methanol engine technology into the CHAMP Barge aligns with the collective industry emphasis on transitioning towards greener and more sustainable energy solutions. By leveraging green methanol, the barge not only reduces emissions but also contributes to the ongoing efforts to create a more environmentally conscious maritime sector.

This collaborative venture between Wärtsilä and EBDG exemplifies the potential for innovation in the maritime industry, showcasing a holistic approach to addressing environmental concerns and operational efficiency. The CHAMP Barge, with its dual capabilities and cutting-edge technology, emerges as a symbol of progress in providing versatile and sustainable solutions for the evolving needs of the maritime sector.
