De Nora, an Italian multinational specializing in electrochemistry and sustainable technologies, has teamed up with Maffei Sarda Silicati to develop a green hydrogen production plant in Ossi, a municipality in Sardinia’s Sassari region. The project, which is supported by PNRR funding and promoted by Maffei Sarda Silicati, will be a significant step in the region's green transition. Maffei Sarda Silicati, a company known for its expertise in extracting, processing, and selling raw materials for the ceramic and hollow glass industries, will oversee the development and operation of the plant. Make Energy, serving as a technical advisor, is also playing a key role in the project.

De Nora will provide its Dragonfly® small electrolyzer, capable of producing 1 MW of green hydrogen. Located on a decommissioned industrial site in Ossi, the new plant will be powered by a 1.5 MW photovoltaic system, ensuring that the entire operation is 100% sustainable. This hydrogen will be used to power Maffei Sarda Silicati’s industrial plant, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels and leading to substantial decarbonization benefits. The plant is expected to generate around 50 tons of hydrogen annually, which will be utilized in various applications, including sustainable mobility, industrial processes, power generation, and heating, further contributing to the decarbonization goals of Sardinia.

The project has received strong support from the local administration, with Ossi's Mayor Pasquale Libinu emphasizing the importance of renewable energy and the project's contribution to the area's environmental restoration. The site, once used for mining, is now being revitalized for green energy production, marking a positive step towards a more sustainable future.

Paolo Dellachà, CEO of De Nora, expressed pride in the partnership, highlighting the role of the company’s Dragonfly® electrolyzer in driving green production processes. He noted that the electrolyzer is particularly well-suited for local industrial needs due to its modular, plug-and-play design. Federico Fiorelli, President of Maffei Sarda Silicati, also praised the project, stating that the installation of the 1 MW electrolyzer by June 2026 would reduce CO2 emissions in the company’s sand drying processes, further aligning with Maffei Sarda Silicati’s commitment to achieving zero emissions across its operations.

Mayor Libinu reiterated the significance of the project, emphasizing the growing importance of renewable energy sources. He noted that the shift away from fossil fuels is crucial for environmental sustainability and welcomed the efforts to restore and repurpose the industrial site for green energy production.

Industrie De Nora is an Italian multinational company, listed on the Euronext Milan stock exchange, that specializes in electrochemistry. As a leader in sustainable technologies, the company plays a key role in the industrial green hydrogen production sector. De Nora offers a diverse portfolio of products and systems designed to enhance energy efficiency in critical industrial electrochemical processes, alongside a wide range of solutions for water treatment.
