CSSC Power (Group) Corporation Limited (CPGC) is set to deploy its advanced Onboard Carbon Capture System (OCCS) on numerous liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, incorporating BASF’s OASE® blue technology. The agreement for the practical application of OCCS on ships was inked between both entities during the 2024 Shanghai International Carbon Neutrality Expo in Technologies, Products, and Achievements ("Shanghai Carbon Neutrality Expo", CNE). CPGC's OCCS initiative aims to drive the transition to low-carbon practices and promote the sustainable evolution of the shipping sector. OASE blue, developed by BASF, serves as a gas treatment solution tailored for CO2 capture applications in flue gas, boasting low energy consumption, minimal solvent losses, and remarkable operational flexibility.

The recent implementation on ships signifies another significant stride in the partnership, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding at the CNE in 2023 and the successful completion of system prototype testing. Presently, CPGC and BASF are collaboratively refining the detailed design of the OCCS unit to align with actual ship conditions, aiming for commercial deployment across various vessel types. Throughout the past year, technical performance assessments of the system prototype have been conducted by CPGC and BASF, with validation from marine classification societies such as the American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai.

Chen Haifeng, General Manager of the Environmental Protection Business Department at CPGC, expressed, "Aligned with global carbon reduction objectives and the prevailing trend towards low-carbon transformation within the shipping sector, CPGC, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, has proactively embraced the responsibility of advancing low-carbon initiatives within shipping, guided by a forward-thinking perspective. We have collaborated closely with BASF to collectively tackle greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime industry, shaping a more sustainable future for low-carbon shipping. CPGC remains committed to fostering innovation and achieving breakthroughs in low-carbon shipping technology, ensuring that every vessel contributes significantly to safeguarding our planet's oceans."

"We are pleased to strengthen our collaboration with CPGC, leveraging their proficiency in marine power systems research, development, manufacturing, and supply. By integrating BASF's gas treatment expertise, we are committed to tackling the energy efficiency enhancement and emission reduction challenges within the maritime industry, in response to the increasing call for decarbonization in maritime operations," remarked Dr. Michael Becker, Senior Vice President, Intermediates Asia Pacific, BASF.

CSSC Power (Group) Corporation Limited (CPGC), a subsidiary of the Fortune 500 company China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), specializes in the research, development, manufacturing, and service provision of power equipment for marine applications. Based in Shanghai, China, CPGC's primary offerings include low, medium, and high-speed marine engines, alongside ancillary products and services such as engine spare parts and power and air pollution control systems. With a global presence spanning nearly 120 countries, the company is a key player in the maritime industry.
