Corteva Inc. has revealed a partnership with bp to create a joint venture (JV) focused on producing crop-based biofuel feedstocks. This collaboration aims to address the growing demand for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), spurred by global efforts to decarbonize the aviation sector. Several countries, including those in the EU, have introduced or are considering mandates and tax incentives to reduce carbon emissions from aviation. For instance, the EU's SAF mandate, set to begin in 2025, requires fuel at EU airports to contain 20% SAF by 2035 and 70% by 2050.

To meet this demand, Corteva and bp have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to form a JV that will gradually scale up production. The goal is to reach one million metric tons of biofuel feedstocks for SAF production annually by the mid-2030s. Corteva intends to partner with farmers across North and South America, as well as Europe, to cultivate proprietary crops such as mustard seed, sunflower, and canola, which are particularly suitable for SAF production. These crops are already integral to global agriculture, and the JV will introduce innovative cropping systems to produce oil that complies with the EU’s RED III sustainability criteria and qualifies for US Low Carbon Intensity policy incentives. The initiative also aims to provide new income opportunities for farmers.

Corteva’s Chief Strategy Officer, Brook Cunningham, emphasized that this partnership highlights agriculture’s role in advancing global decarbonization goals. He noted that Corteva’s technology, global presence, and strong relationships with growers will be pivotal in supporting the shift toward sustainable aviation. Cunningham expressed excitement about partnering with bp to help European airlines become more sustainable while providing farmers with additional revenue sources.

Emma Delaney, bp’s executive vice president for customers & products, echoed Cunningham’s sentiment, highlighting the potential of combining Corteva’s expertise in agriculture with bp’s refining and trading capabilities to create significant value. The companies are working toward finalizing definitive agreements by 2025, with the aim to launch the JV later that year. The joint venture represents a major step forward in creating a sustainable biofuel supply chain for the aviation industry and supporting farmers in adopting more sustainable practices.
