CMES, a prominent player in the shipping industry and a subsidiary of China Merchants Group, has inked a substantial deal with China Merchants Industry for the acquisition of eight new vessels, amounting to approximately $508 million. The agreement, signed on November 13, 2023, encompasses a diverse fleet, including four 7,800 Car Equivalent Unit (CEU) methanol-powered dual fuel car carriers, two 82,000 deadweight tonnage (dwt) dry bulk carriers, and two 62,000 dwt multipurpose ships.

Anticipated to be delivered in the third quarter of 2026, the methanol-fueled car carriers are set to revolutionize the maritime landscape with their innovative features. These vessels will be equipped with a cutting-edge 60-cylinder methanol internal combustion engine. Notably, the engine is designed to seamlessly switch between green methanol and traditional diesel, offering versatility and adaptability in fuel usage.

In a strategic move earlier in March 2023, CMES had initially ordered two 9,000 CEU methanol-powered roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessels, with the provision for additional orders for four similar units. In the latest development, CMES has exercised options for four additional ships, adjusting the capacity from 9,000 CEU to 7,800 CEU. This modification aims to enhance port and cargo capacity, demonstrating CMES's commitment to optimizing operational efficiency. The expanded fleet of car carriers is intended to support the domestic automobile export industry and further bolster the company's international RoRo transportation business.

The four bulk carriers included in the order are scheduled for delivery between the second half of 2025 and the end of 2026. CMES emphasizes the adoption of state-of-the-art, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly ship designs from the SDARI under the CSSC. The 82,000 dwt dry bulk carriers will feature desulfurization towers and shaft generators, contributing to emissions reduction and compliance with environmental standards. Meanwhile, the 62,000 dwt multipurpose ships are designed to accommodate 150-ton cranes, enhancing their versatility and functionality in various maritime operations.

This substantial investment by CMES underscores the company's forward-looking approach to maritime transportation, incorporating technological advancements and environmentally conscious practices. The addition of methanol-powered vessels, with their dual fuel capabilities, aligns with the industry's growing emphasis on sustainable and eco-friendly solutions. Furthermore, the diversified fleet, including bulk carriers and multipurpose ships, positions CMES as a versatile and comprehensive player in the global shipping market.

As the maritime sector continues to evolve, CMES's strategic decisions in fleet expansion and technological integration signal its commitment to staying at the forefront of industry trends. The successful implementation of these initiatives is poised to contribute not only to the company's growth but also to the overall progress of the shipping industry towards a more sustainable and efficient future.
