Carras (Hellas) S.A. is advancing its sustainability efforts by achieving the ABS Biofuel-1 notation for its ultramax bulk carrier, the Aquataurus. This milestone makes Aquataurus the inaugural vessel worldwide to attain this recognition.

This notation is designated for vessels utilizing a biofuel blend containing up to 30 percent biofuel, in adherence to both IMO and ABS regulations.

Biofuels are liquid hydrocarbon fuels, possessing composition and characteristics akin to traditional fuel oil. However, they are derived from renewable sources like crops, agricultural and forestry residue, animal by-products, as well as vegetable and animal fats. Consequently, they present an opportunity for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction throughout the entire fuel production and consumption process. Carras (Hellas) S.A. intends to utilize biofuels, specifically those labeled up to B30, wherein 70 percent constitutes fossil fuel, and the remaining 30 percent originates from biomass sources such as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVOs) or fatty acid methyl esters (FAME).

Biofuels' compatibility with current power generation systems renders them seamlessly integrable without necessitating equipment modifications or vessel redesigns. The Aquataurus, equipped with a Wartsilla main engine and three auxiliary Yanmar engines, is poised to operate on global trade routes.

"We are immensely proud to assist Carras (Hellas) S.A. in their commitment to integrating biofuels into their sustainability agenda. Drop-in biofuels offer an immediate solution, leveraging the current fuel transport and bunkering infrastructure. With our extensive expertise in alternative fuels, ABS is poised to guide clients throughout their decarbonization efforts," stated Stamatis Fradelos, ABS Vice President of Regulatory Affairs.

"Carras (Hellas) S.A. is delighted to collaborate with ABS in our shared mission of lowering fleet emissions to benefit the environment. Utilizing biofuels empowers shipowners to decrease their fleet's carbon intensity without the need for costly retrofits or investments in new vessels. We are thrilled to pioneer this effort alongside ABS and achieve the assignment of the Biofuel-1 notation for Aquataurus," remarked Captain Costas Liadis, President of Carras (Hellas) S.A.

ABS offers top-tier guidance to support owners, along with services and solutions pertaining to alternative fuels, such as biofuels. Notably, ABS spearheaded a consortium, comprising CE Delft and Arcsilea, which published a comprehensive overview of biofuels for the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA).

Founded in 1862 as the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has evolved into a prestigious international classification society, providing essential services to the maritime field. ABS is committed to promoting safety, security, and environmental protection in the industry. In today's dynamic business environment, marked by the growing impact of digital technology and data analytics, ABS remains flexible, adjusting to these shifts. By utilizing cutting-edge technology, digital resources, and refining core procedures, ABS aims to excel in safety, improve performance, and streamline operations. These endeavors ultimately deliver increased benefits to both members and clients.
