A groundbreaking partnership between Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and KPIT Technologies is set to electrify Kerala's public transportation with hydrogen-powered buses, marking a significant stride towards India's sustainable mobility goals. The alliance, unveiled at the Global Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Summit in Kochi, aims to establish a pioneering hydrogen ecosystem in the state.

The core of this initiative involves the creation of Hydrogen Refuelling Stations (HRS) in Kochi and Trivandrum, which will serve as vital hubs for pilot projects featuring hydrogen fuel cell buses. These buses, operating between the two cities, will demonstrate the viability of hydrogen as a clean and efficient fuel source for public transport, setting a precedent for nationwide adoption.

The collaboration emphasizes the use of indigenous technologies, aligning with India's "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" vision. BPCL will deploy locally developed alkaline electrolysers to produce green hydrogen, while KPIT will contribute its expertise in designing and manufacturing fuel cell-powered buses. This synergy of local innovation is crucial for building a self-reliant and sustainable hydrogen economy.

The unveiling of Kerala's first hydrogen bus provided a tangible demonstration of the partnership's potential. Senior government officials experienced firsthand the quiet and efficient operation of this next-generation vehicle. The pilot project will gather critical data on the performance of hydrogen fuel cell technology under Kerala's unique climatic conditions, including high humidity and seasonal rainfall. This data will be instrumental in refining and scaling the technology for broader deployment.

BPCL's HRS will produce high-purity green hydrogen, ensuring a clean and reliable fuel supply for the buses. These stations will also serve as training grounds for BPCL personnel, building expertise in hydrogen dispensing and infrastructure development, essential for the expansion of hydrogen mobility across India.

Shri G. Krishnakumar, Chairman and Managing Director of BPCL, highlighted the transformative potential of the partnership, stating, "This collaboration propels us towards establishing a robust hydrogen ecosystem in India, providing cleaner and greener alternatives for public transportation and reducing our carbon footprint significantly."
