Bolivian President Luis Arce shared exciting news on Monday, revealing the discovery of a substantial natural gas reserve amounting to 1.7 trillion cubic feet (TCF) north of La Paz, Bolivia's administrative hub. This discovery marks a significant milestone for the landlocked nation, which has been grappling with energy challenges amid declining oil and gas production impacting its currency reserves. The state energy firm YPFB has been actively seeking solutions to recent fuel shortages, making this discovery particularly timely and promising.
"In confirming the discovery of a 1.7 TCF reserve, we are witnessing Bolivia's most significant find since 2005," President Arce announced from the government palace. He highlighted that this new field, named Mayaya Centro-X1 IE, is poised to become one of the country's top producing fields. The field's inclusion in YPFB's Upstream Reactivation Plan underscores its strategic importance in bolstering Bolivia's energy security and economic stability.
The Mayaya Centro-X1 field's addition to Bolivia's existing gas reserves, which were reported at 8.95 TCF as of December 2018, represents a crucial expansion of the nation's energy resources. Over recent years, Bolivia has seen a decline in natural gas production, with figures dropping from 56.6 million cubic meters per day (MMm3d) in 2016 to 31.9 MMm3d by 2023, according to YPFB data.
President Arce emphasized the transformative potential of the Mayaya Centro-X1 field, highlighting its role in mitigating Bolivia's energy challenges and supporting economic growth. The announcement comes at a pivotal time, offering hope for increased energy independence and resilience in the face of global energy market fluctuations.
The discovery not only promises to strengthen Bolivia's position as a significant player in the regional energy landscape but also to stimulate economic activities and job creation associated with the gas sector.
The unveiling of the Mayaya Centro-X1 field reflects Bolivia's ongoing efforts to revitalize its energy sector through strategic investments and partnerships. President Arce's announcement signals a renewed focus on harnessing Bolivia's natural wealth to drive prosperity and address critical energy needs.
As Bolivia looks ahead, the discovery of this natural gas reserve is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the country's energy future, providing a foundation for enhanced stability and growth in the years to come.
Natural gas consists primarily of methane (CH4), a gaseous mixture of hydrocarbons that is odorless. It constitutes approximately 30% of the energy consumed in the United States. The main application of natural gas is electricity generation, providing over 25% of the nation's electrical power.
