Following extensive preparation, Blue World Technologies is pleased to announce the successful testing of the world’s inaugural 200 kW high-temperature PEM fuel cell module. This milestone was achieved at the newly established testing facilities adjacent to the Blue Aalborg Factory, where the system’s fuel cells are manufactured. Initial testing has yielded exceptional results, surpassing performance expectations.

Once commercially deployed, the fuel cell system boasts an electrical efficiency of up to 55%, translating into substantial fuel savings of 20-30%, thereby facilitating cost-effective utilization of green fuels. Furthermore, the system supports up to 100% carbon capture, usable for green fuel production or storage purposes.

"This marks a significant advancement in maritime decarbonization. Through testing our 200 kW system, we demonstrate the potential of HT PEM fuel cell technology as a pivotal solution for reducing emissions in challenging sectors. Throughout the testing phase, we successfully verified our system configuration, including the methanol fuel processor, the series connection of fuel cell stacks, and the surrounding balance of plant components," stated Dennis Naldal Jensen, Chief Technology Officer at Blue World Technologies.

The initial pilot system is a 1 MW unit designed for onboard power generation. It will be installed on one of A.P. Moller – Maersk’s large dual-fuel methanol vessels, with installation anticipated in the first half of 2026.

" With over two decades dedicated to fuel cell technology, witnessing this stage of technological advancement is remarkable as we introduce resilient alternatives to industries heavily dependent on fossil fuels. Maersk leads globally in maritime decarbonization, and we are delighted with our collaboration on the inaugural 1 MW pilot. We eagerly anticipate deploying the system at sea," remarked Anders Korsgaard, Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of Blue World Technologies.

Following the pilot system order, Maersk Growth, the venture arm of A.P. Moller – Maersk, invested in an 11 million EUR pre-C-round at the end of 2023. This investment included participation from The Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO), Cycle Group, and other new and existing shareholders. Recognizing the significant potential of HT PEM fuel cell technology, they are closely monitoring the system's development and testing progress.

Initially, Blue World will deliver systems for auxiliary power, with expectations to achieve commercial readiness for their maritime system by 2027. Ultimately, the company plans to advance to supplying multi-megawatt propulsion systems for global shipping, where fuel cell technology promises significant environmental and climate benefits.
