BKV Unveils Groundbreaking Carbon-Neutral Natural Gas Product with First Sale to Kiewit

BKV Corporation (BKV) has officially entered into a contract with Kiewit Infrastructure South Co., a branch of Kiewit Corporation, one of North America’s leading construction and engineering firms. This contract involves the sale and purchase of Carbon Sequestered Gas (CSG), a groundbreaking natural gas product that is carbon-neutral across Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, effectively minimizing the environmental footprint of natural gas use. This strategic partnership aligns two industry giants committed to cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

Starting this fall, BKV will supply Kiewit with CSG at a premium above the Henry Hub price. This pioneering carbon-neutral natural gas is created by coupling low methane intensity natural gas with comprehensive emissions offsets across the entire gas value chain, including production, processing, and distribution, through BKV’s advanced carbon capture, sequestration, and utilization (CCUS) technology. BKV employs rigorous emissions calculation methods and transparent third-party blockchain-enabled verification to ensure accuracy, offering buyers assured emissions data. CSG presents a fully decarbonized, certified, and premium fuel and retired credits package.

BKV CEO Chris Kalnin expressed excitement about providing the innovative carbon-neutral natural gas product, CSG, to Kiewit. He highlighted that this sale aligns with BKV's mission to reduce emissions and achieve energy impact goals. Kalnin believes that CSG can be scaled to meet the future energy needs of various industries nationwide and will complement other sustainable energy approaches, furthering efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Fort Worth Maintenance Facility of Kiewit Infrastructure South will receive CSG through a newly constructed pipeline that will also service the entire Markum Business Park, an advanced industrial space in south Fort Worth developed by Wilks Development.

Kalnin emphasized that Carbon Sequestered Gas (CSG) offers end-users a unique opportunity to purchase emissions-certified natural gas verified through blockchain technology, ensuring transparency and trust essential for the energy transition. He expressed optimism that more tenants at Markum Business Park will adopt CSG, contributing to emissions reduction efforts. Kalnin reiterated BKV's commitment to leading in carbon-neutral natural gas production and looks forward to future sales and partnerships with additional end-users, supporting their energy needs and emissions reduction goals, while expanding BKV's CCUS business and the availability of CSG in the market.

BKV has consistently demonstrated its commitment to carbon reduction by launching BKV dCarbon Ventures, a dedicated CCUS business line equipped with the necessary resources to efficiently evaluate and develop a pipeline of feasible CCUS projects. BKV dCarbon Ventures strategically focuses on the permanent sequestration of point-source emissions, driving innovations and project development in the CCUS sector. The production of CSG is facilitated by BKV’s Barnett Zero project, initiated in November 2023, featuring one of the nation’s first purpose-drilled, Class II commercial carbon sequestration wells for CO2 waste from natural gas processing plants. Approved by both the Texas Railroad Commission and the EPA, the project aims to sequester an average of 185,000 metric tons of CO2 annually, setting a benchmark for future Class II and Class VI wells.
