Introducing its initial biomass-balanced (BMB) ammonia and urea offerings, BASF expands its BMB choices throughout the ammonia value chain. The diverse product lineup encompasses ammonia anhydrous BMBcert™, ammonia solution 24.5% BMBcert™, urea prills BMBcert™, urea solution 40% BMBcert™, and urea solution 45% BMBcert™.
BASF employs a biomass balance method, substituting fossil resources at the production outset with certified biowaste raw materials that contribute to the products. These mass-balanced items adhere to ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) PLUS standards. Moreover, BASF utilizes electricity sourced from renewables in the manufacturing of ammonia and urea, thus decreasing their production-related emissions.
Implementing these strategies reduces the product carbon footprint (PCF) of these items by a minimum of 80% compared to the average PCF of traditional fossil ammonia derivatives (Referring to the mean CO2 footprints outlined in the "Default values for the transitional period for the CBAM between October 1, 2023, and December 31, 2025," as issued by the European Commission on December 22, 2023), all while maintaining quality and performance standards. The certified BMBcert™ products empower customers to diminish their scope 3 emissions and decrease the product carbon footprint of their own products.
"BASF pioneered the development of both industrial ammonia and urea processes. Now, we're the first to introduce biomass-balanced options as standard offerings within our ammonia and urea portfolio. This portfolio not only meets the growing demand in the industry but also assists our customers in achieving their sustainability objectives," stated Dr. Jens Aßmann, Vice President of Business Management for the Ammonia Value Chain and Operations Amino Resins at BASF.
The BMB ammonia derivative portfolio marks another milestone on BASF Monomers division's sustainability journey, announced last year. The division aims to introduce at least one circular or lower PCF option for each major product line by 2025. These sustainable offerings are integral to BASF's commitment to achieving climate neutrality and net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050.
