A significant step towards sustainable aviation has been marked with Avfuel Corporation, a leading independent supplier of aviation fuel and services, taking the first delivery of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) produced by Diamond Green Diesel (DGD). This milestone signifies a pivotal moment in the aviation industry's journey towards a greener future.
Naples Aviation (KAPF) has become the first network location in the eastern United States to offer SAF for general sale, accepting Avfuel's delivery. This achievement follows a recent SAF supply agreement between Avfuel and Valero Marketing and Supply Company, a subsidiary of Valero.
Produced from waste-based feedstocks such as used cooking oil, animal tallow, and distiller's corn oil, DGD's neat SAF boasts an impressive, estimated lifecycle greenhouse gas emission reduction of up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel.
Randall C. Stuewe, Darling Ingredients Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, expressed enthusiasm about this milestone. “As the world's largest producer of SAF made from waste-based feedstocks, DGD is leading the way in reducing aviation's carbon footprint and accelerating the decarbonization of the aviation sector,” he stated. “This milestone proves that we can transform waste into renewable energy at an unprecedented scale, driving meaningful progress toward a more sustainable future.”
DGD's Port Arthur, Texas, facility, which loaded its first SAF shipment on November 16, has converted approximately 50% of its annual 470 million gallon capacity to SAF. This conversion positions it as one of the world's largest SAF manufacturers, capable of producing a substantial amount of sustainable fuel.
This collaboration between Avfuel and DGD underscores the growing momentum in the adoption of SAF. By leveraging waste-based feedstocks, DGD's SAF offers a practical and effective solution to reduce aviation's environmental impact. As the aviation industry seeks to minimize its carbon footprint, SAF emerges as a crucial component of a sustainable future.
With this initial delivery and the ongoing expansion of SAF production, the aviation industry is poised to make significant strides towards a more environmentally friendly future.
Avfuel is a global leader in sustainability and circularity, transforming materials from the animal agriculture and food industries into valuable ingredients across three key sectors: Feed, Food, and Fuel.
In its Fuel segment, Avfuel leads the transition to renewable energy by producing low-emission biofuels from organic materials, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and helping combat climate change. The company’s commitment to a circular economy drives its efforts to close the loop in global supply chains by converting waste into valuable resources, ultimately reducing environmental harm and maximizing resource efficiency. With a strong focus on innovation and sustainability, Avfuel is shaping a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future through its holistic approach to circularity across Feed, Food, and Fuel.
