On October 22, 2024, Avantium N.V., a pioneer in renewable and circular polymers, celebrated the official opening of its FDCA Flagship Plant in Delfzijl, the Netherlands. The ceremony was officiated by Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, who was joined by dignitaries, partners, and Avantium employees from both local and international backgrounds. This milestone event underscores Avantium's progress in creating renewable, circular materials and acknowledges the dedication of its team and collaborators.
The Delfzijl facility is the world’s first commercial plant to produce FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid), a key ingredient for Releaf, Avantium’s brand of 100% plant-based and circular plastic known as polyethylene furanoate (PEF). The plant will produce 5 kilotons of FDCA annually, supporting the production of Releaf for a range of applications such as bottles, packaging, films, and textiles, which promise to revolutionize the plastics industry.
Avantium CEO Tom van Aken emphasized the significance of the plant, stating, "This marks the beginning of a new era for sustainable plastics. Our FDCA plant represents our dedication to innovation and sustainability, offering a viable alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics. This is not only a testament to our technological achievements but also our commitment to generating long-term sustainable value for all stakeholders. We now begin the start-up phase of the FDCA Flagship Plant, introducing Releaf to the market and accelerating our FDCA/PEF licensing strategy.”
The grand opening event, held next to the new plant, attracted approximately 300 attendees. In addition to remarks from CEO Tom van Aken, the event featured speeches from Sophie Hermans, Minister of Climate and Green Growth, and John Bell, Director of the ‘Healthy Planet’ initiative at the European Commission. Hosted by chemist and entertainer Shirma Rouse, the ceremony culminated in Queen Máxima turning a valve, unveiling the plant as a large curtain dropped. Inside, the plant’s employees witnessed the momentous occasion.
Following the ceremony, Queen Máxima toured the facility and discussed topics such as the market potential for Releaf, the circular economy, and the shift from fossil-based to bio-based feedstock with Avantium stakeholders. She received a detailed explanation of Releaf's applications before guests were invited to explore the plant. Additionally, attendees had the opportunity to visit an exhibition in the historic Heveskes church, showcasing Releaf's feedstock and diverse uses.
On October 23, 2024, Avantium will host a Retail Investor Day, offering retail shareholders a tour of the plant and a series of activities. Registration for the event is closed.
