Athenian Sea Carriers, a prominent Greek shipping firm, has exercised its options to commission the construction of four eco-chemical tankers from the renowned Chinese shipbuilding company, Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group. These vessels, boasting a deadweight capacity of 18,500 tons (dwt), are meticulously designed to adhere to the most stringent environmental standards, encompassing compliance with NOx-Tier III regulations, certification under EEDI Phase 3, and the ability to utilize both LNG and methanol fuels.
The financial aspects of this significant investment, as per data from Intermodal, indicate that Athenian Sea Carriers will incur an approximate cost of $30 million per vessel. All four of these cutting-edge units are scheduled for delivery in 2025.
One of the most notable features of these tankers is their innate flexibility regarding fuel sources. These vessels will be equipped with the requisite fuel and piping infrastructure, enabling their seamless conversion to LNG and/or methanol-powered operation at a later stage. This forward-looking approach to fuel versatility ensures adaptability in the face of evolving energy needs.
Furthermore, the eco-chemical tankers are set to achieve NOx-Tier III compliance, aligning with stringent regulations aimed at mitigating nitrogen oxide emissions. Such compliance is not only a regulatory obligation but also a significant contribution to fostering cleaner air and reducing environmental impact.
These vessels will also be officially certified under the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEDI) Phase 3, which signifies their commitment to elevating energy efficiency and environmental performance beyond industry standards. This certification underscores Athenian Sea Carriers' dedication to sustainable shipping practices.
It is noteworthy that Athenian Sea Carriers has additional ongoing projects at Wuchang Shipbuilding, with four smaller chemical tankers currently under construction. These vessels are slated for delivery in 2025, reflecting the company's commitment to fleet expansion and modernization.
This investment and expansion strategy showcases Athenian Sea Carriers' commitment to adapting to the evolving landscape of the shipping industry, marked by the rising importance of eco-friendly and sustainable practices. By commissioning eco-chemical tankers that adhere to strict environmental standards and boast fuel flexibility, the company positions itself to meet future energy demands and regulatory requirements effectively.
The focus on NOx-Tier III compliance not only aligns with global environmental goals but also underscores the company's proactive stance in contributing to cleaner air and healthier ecosystems. Additionally, certification under EEDI Phase 3 signifies a strong commitment to energy efficiency, positioning Athenian Sea Carriers as a forward-thinking player in the maritime sector.
As Athenian Sea Carriers continues to modernize its fleet and expand its capabilities, it seeks to remain competitive and environmentally responsible in an ever-evolving global shipping industry. This investment in eco-chemical tankers is a testament to the company's dedication to growth, sustainability, and adaptability in the face of emerging industry trends and standards.
