Arkema, a global leader in specialty materials, has further expanded its bio-attributed product portfolio by obtaining ISCC PLUS certification for its acrylic and liquid polyester resins (OFPE) manufacturing site in Pasir Gudang, Malaysia. This certification is a significant step in Arkema’s global mass balance roadmap, ensuring that the company continues to provide sustainable solutions across diverse industries, including coatings, adhesives for renewable energy, green mobility, living comfort, and infrastructure efficiency.
Mass balance is a recognized methodology that allows manufacturers to track certified materials throughout the value chain. It ensures that certified bio-based feedstocks have replaced an equivalent volume of fossil raw materials at the beginning of the supply chain and attributes this sustainable input to the final product through verified bookkeeping. This process guarantees a balance between the input of certified raw materials and the output of bio-attributed products.
“This certification expands the availability of Arkema’s advanced liquid resin solutions from renewable sources, reducing product carbon footprint. It introduces a new range of bio-attributed materials that complement our existing bio-based resins and additives, which contain up to 100% biobased content,” said Yoon Hock Chong, Managing Director of ACRM Coating Solutions Southeast Asia.
The certification of Arkema’s Malaysian facility follows similar ISCC PLUS accreditations in the United States, Europe, and China, underscoring the company’s commitment to progressively developing a comprehensive range of bio-attributed specialty resins and additives. This includes high-solids coatings, waterborne solutions, UV/LED/EB-curable resins, and polyester powders.
Bio-attributed content refers to the proportion of biobased feedstock assigned to a material using mass balance methodology, as per ISCC PLUS standards. This is distinct from traditional biobased materials, which are verified using the radiocarbon method. By integrating this approach, Arkema is reinforcing its leadership in sustainable materials and driving innovation in environmentally responsible production.
Arkema’s expertise in material science enables it to deliver high-performance, sustainable solutions that address growing global challenges, including renewable energy, water access, recycling, urbanization, and mobility. With its vision to become a pure Specialty Materials player by 2024, Arkema is structured into three core segments: Adhesive Solutions, Advanced Materials, and Coating Solutions, which together accounted for approximately 92% of its €9.5 billion revenue in 2023. The company also maintains a competitive Intermediates segment.
Operating in 55 countries with a workforce of 21,100 employees, Arkema remains dedicated to sustainability, technological innovation, and collaboration with stakeholders to drive the transition toward greener materials.
