Arkema, a frontrunner in specialty materials, has achieved a major milestone in its sustainability initiatives by securing ISCC PLUS certification for its facility in Changshu, China. This certification enables Arkema to adopt the Mass Balance approach, facilitating the introduction of a new range of bio-attributed waterborne acrylic resins and additives in Asia. These advancements will contribute to the development of more sustainable solutions for coating applications in the rapidly expanding local markets, including new energy, e-mobility, enhanced living comfort, and improved building efficiency.
The ISCC PLUS certification broadens Arkema's portfolio of renewable origin rheology modifiers and waterborne resins, contributing to a reduced carbon footprint. It also enhances the existing range of bio-based segregated resins and additives, which contain up to 100% biobased content. This development reflects Arkema's commitment to sustainability and the ongoing transition towards environmentally friendly materials.
Heidi Wang, General Manager of Rheology/Specialty Additives and Coating Resins at Arkema for Greater China, emphasized the company's mission to mitigate climate change and conserve resources. “To combat climate change and preserve resources, we are progressively replacing virgin fossil feedstocks with renewable and more circular sources. Alongside the segregated model, the mass balance approach allows industries to accelerate the reduction of CO2 emissions and promote circularity throughout the value chain,” she explained.
The ISCC PLUS certification for Arkema's Changshu manufacturing site follows similar certifications achieved in the United States, Europe, and China. This global recognition underscores Arkema's strategy to gradually introduce a comprehensive range of bio-attributed specialty resins and additives that cater to high solids, waterborne, UV/LED/EB, and polyester powder technologies.
Arkema's commitment to sustainability extends beyond just achieving certifications; it is part of a broader strategy aimed at integrating more renewable materials into its production processes. The company's approach not only aims to meet the increasing demand for sustainable products but also addresses the urgent need for industries to reduce their environmental impact.
By leveraging the Mass Balance methodology, Arkema can offer products that contain renewable resources while ensuring the integrity of their existing supply chains. This innovative approach positions Arkema as a leader in the specialty materials sector, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
In conclusion, the ISCC PLUS certification of Arkema's Changshu site represents a vital step forward in the company's sustainability journey, aligning its production capabilities with the global push for greener solutions. The launch of bio-attributed waterborne acrylic resins and additives will support various industries in their quest for sustainable practices, reinforcing Arkema’s dedication to environmentally friendly innovation.
