Antofagasta Minerals and ABB have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expedite decarbonization efforts by electrifying and automating mining operations in Chile. This partnership focuses on creating and deploying a net-zero emission haulage solution, utilizing ABB’s expertise and its eMineTM technology.
The mining industry faces the dual challenge of meeting rising copper demand driven by the energy transition while also addressing the need to decarbonize its operations. Projections indicate that current and planned mining projects will supply only 70 percent of the copper needed by 2035. To achieve widespread decarbonization, net-zero emission haul trucks are seen as a crucial solution. The partnership between ABB and Antofagasta Minerals marks a significant advancement in promoting electrification in mining and setting industry best practices.
Antofagasta Minerals, driven by its mission to “develop mining for a better future,” is leading the way in decarbonization efforts. The company aims to cut its emissions by 50 percent by 2035 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, having already decreased its Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon dioxide emissions by 928,000 tons. By advancing the trolley trial at its Los Pelambres operation, Antofagasta Minerals has been instrumental in promoting electrical solutions within the mining sector. The company anticipates that electrification will offer effective ways to reduce emissions in its haulage processes and plans to test battery-powered trucks and trolley assist technologies in the coming years.
ABB is aiding Antofagasta Minerals in its decarbonization journey by providing advanced technology solutions from its eMine portfolio. The collaboration will focus on using ABB’s eMine consultative studies to determine the most effective technological and economic approach for an all-electric mine. This includes assessing decarbonization technologies, their impact on mine operations and design, and power distribution.
Recognizing the essential role of net-zero emission haul trucks in achieving greenhouse gas reduction targets, ABB and Antofagasta Minerals will work together with other partners to fast-track the development of net-zero emission haulage solutions. Antofagasta Minerals will serve as an early adopter and testing site for the technology, committing to the use of ABB’s eMine Trolley System. This system can cut diesel consumption by up to 90 percent in certain conditions, reducing energy costs and environmental impact. Additionally, this technology not only addresses immediate emission reductions but also paves the way for future battery technology integration in the mining sector.
Max Luedtke, Global Business Line Manager Mining at ABB, stated, “Our mutual commitment to advancing sustainable processes and operations in the mining sector drives us to innovate and explore new possibilities. Collaborating across the industry is crucial for making significant strides in reducing environmental impact. Antofagasta Minerals, as one of the major players in copper mining, is a key partner in this endeavor. Together with ABB’s comprehensive eMine framework, we are making substantial progress toward creating the all-electric mine of the future and advancing decarbonization efforts. We are dedicated to this collaborative effort to develop further solutions.”
