DHL Express is intensifying its efforts in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) initiatives through a strategic collaboration with global bank Standard Chartered for its GoGreen Plus service. This partnership entails both entities co-investing in SAF, enabling Standard Chartered to offset CO2 emissions associated with its upstream logistics through Verified Emission Reductions (VER) carbon credits.
Standing among the vanguard of banks to embrace the GoGreen Plus service on a global scale, Standard Chartered has committed to achieving net-zero emissions in its operational activities by 2025, extending this objective to its financed emissions by 2050. In its inaugural year, Standard Chartered foresees a potential reduction of up to 30% in emissions (compared to a 2019 baseline), with an anticipated incremental reduction of 7% annually starting from 2025. This partnership is forecasted to save approximately 3,780 tonnes CO2e between 2024 and 2030.
As an integral component of the GoGreen Plus service, Standard Chartered will receive monthly reports on the carbon footprint of its shipments and quarterly certification of emission reductions from an independent auditor. This collaboration builds upon the enduring partnership between Standard Chartered and DHL, which spans over two decades. Notably, Standard Chartered was the first bank to adopt DHL's GoGreen service in 2011. Now, the two entities are pooling their efforts to enhance the sustainability of international express shipping.
Given Standard Chartered's pivotal role as a leading trade finance provider, its customers rely on the bank's expertise to manage vital trade and shipping documents, ensuring seamless transactional processes. Despite the ongoing digitization of trade documentation, the decision to scale up SAF usage with DHL Express, Standard Chartered's logistics partner, underscores a concerted effort to mitigate emissions linked to this essential service. This initiative is aligned with Standard Chartered's commitment to achieving net zero and serves as a benefit for its customers.
In 2023, DHL Express introduced the GoGreen Plus service, enabling customers to reduce CO2e emissions associated with airfreight through SAF utilization. Earlier this year, DHL Express forged GoGreen Plus agreements with German consumer electronics company Medion and e-commerce platform Mytheresa. Supported by SAF contracts with BP, Neste, and World Energy, GoGreen Plus is an integral component of DHL Group's aspiration to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Given that the airfreight network accounts for approximately 90% of the company's carbon footprint, sustainable air transportation solutions play a pivotal role in realizing greener logistics.
DHL, a logistics enterprise headquartered in Germany, specializes in courier, package delivery, and express mail services, handling a volume of over 1.7 billion parcels annually.
