Crowley has launched operations for the first U.S.-flagged liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, named American Energy, which will deliver domestically sourced LNG to Puerto Rico. This development is a significant step in enhancing Puerto Rico's access to reliable U.S.-produced natural gas, helping to address the island's ongoing energy requirements.
Crowley and Naturgy have signed a multi-year agreement that ensures consistent LNG deliveries from the U.S. mainland to Naturgy's facility in Penuelas, Puerto Rico. The American Energy, owned by Crowley, boasts a substantial capacity of 130,400 cubic meters (approximately 34.4 million gallons) per voyage. The vessel operates under the U.S. Coast Guard Authorization Act of 1996 and holds a CAP 1 rating, the highest certification for safety and vessel condition, ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards.
Puerto Rico Governor Jenniffer González-Colón highlighted the importance of this achievement, stating that American Energy's deployment is vital for strengthening the island's energy grid and improving power reliability. She emphasized that the collaboration utilizes existing regulations to enhance access to U.S.-based LNG, ultimately supporting Puerto Rico's transition to a more stable energy infrastructure.
The 900-foot (274-meter) LNG carrier reflects Crowley's long-standing commitment to Puerto Rico, extending over 70 years. The company operates the Isla Grande marine terminal in San Juan, managing container and roll-on/roll-off vessel services, including two LNG-powered ships and comprehensive logistics solutions. Crowley also supplies over 94 million gallons of LNG annually through its LNG Loading Terminal in Penuelas and handles ocean delivery and land transportation via ISO tank containers.
Each American Energy voyage carries enough LNG to power roughly 80,000 homes for one year. LNG is a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels, emitting lower greenhouse gases than diesel and other conventional energy sources.
Tom Crowley, chairman and CEO of Crowley Corporation, expressed pride in expanding LNG supply to Puerto Rico through this partnership with Naturgy. He emphasized that LNG offers a secure and lower-emission energy option, supporting Puerto Rico's increasing energy demands while reinforcing American energy production and job growth.
Jon Ganuza, general manager of supply and wholesale markets at Naturgy, stated that this agreement strengthens their presence in the U.S. LNG market while ensuring Puerto Rico's access to a stable and cost-effective energy source.
The American Energy will be manned by U.S. mariners and operate on a dedicated route between the U.S. Gulf Coast and Puerto Rico. Willie Barrere, National President of American Maritime Officers, praised this initiative, noting that U.S. mariners, including many from Puerto Rico, have consistently supported the island's trade. David Heindel, President of the Seafarers International Union, also expressed excitement about providing crew members for this historic partnership, reinforcing the longstanding bond between Puerto Rico and the U.S. maritime community.
