AkzoNobel Packaging Coatings has introduced the Securshield™ 500 Series, a new PVC-free and Bisphenol-free (BPXni) internal coating tailored for easy-open food can ends. This innovative product not only meets existing and anticipated regulatory requirements but also represents a significant leap forward in sustainability and performance compared to traditional organosol-based coatings.

Designed to enhance the functionality of easy-open ends, the Securshield™ 500 Series is compatible with a wide array of metal food packaging formats and seamlessly integrates into current production processes. This versatility allows coil coaters to efficiently meet the diverse needs of food can manufacturers using a single technology solution.

The launch of the Securshield™ 500 Series comes amidst a challenging period for coil coaters, can makers, and their clientele, driven by regulatory shifts such as the European Commission's phase-out of Bisphenols. Additionally, there is mounting concern from NGOs and retailers regarding the use of plastics in food packaging, making sustainable alternatives like the Securshield™ 500 Series increasingly relevant.

This new internal coating for easy-open ends is available in aluminum or gold sizecoats, complemented by a gold topcoat and applied using roller technology. This application method not only ensures optimized line efficiency but also accommodates tandem lines and chrome-free substrates, guaranteeing robust performance across various production environments.

Crucially, the Securshield™ 500 Series boasts enhanced chemical resistance, particularly against corrosion from salty or acidic preserved foods such as vegetables, fish, and fruits. This feature enhances food safety and extends shelf life, meeting stringent standards for food contact materials.

Part of AkzoNobel’s advanced portfolio for food packaging solutions, the Securshield™ 500 Series underscores the company’s commitment to a Bisphenol-free future. This launch follows recent introductions of next-generation coatings for beverage cans, which are free from Bisphenol, styrene, and PFAS, further demonstrating AkzoNobel’s leadership in sustainable packaging technologies.

By expanding its range of next-generation solutions, AkzoNobel continues to provide the metal can packaging industry with safe and effective alternatives for challenging food and beverage applications. These innovations align with current and future regulatory frameworks from the FDA and EU, ensuring compliance and reliability in food packaging materials.

Since 1792, AkzoNobel has been a leading provider of innovative paints and coatings that not only add color to people’s lives but also protect what matters most. With a world-class portfolio of brands including Dulux, International, Sikkens, and Interpon, AkzoNobel is trusted by customers worldwide.
