Airbus is investing in LanzaJet, a prominent sustainable fuels technology company and producer, to advance its goal of driving the global development of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).
This investment will aid in advancing the Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) pathway, a crucial step for producing SAF at scale. It will enable LanzaJet to enhance its capabilities and expand its capacity to scale up its proprietary Ethanol to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) technology.
"Sustainable aviation fuels are crucial for decarbonizing aviation, yet their production remains limited. Our partnership with LanzaJet highlights Airbus' dedication to collaborating with leading energy technology providers to explore innovative production methods and scale SAF," said Julie Kitcher, Chief Sustainability Officer at Airbus. "This significant collaboration with LanzaJet underscores the need for new technologies and cross-sector partnerships to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050."
"LanzaJet has deliberately assembled a diverse group of strategic investors, including top global companies, to build the ecosystem necessary for scaling the SAF industry," said Jimmy Samartzis, Chief Executive Officer of LanzaJet. "This crucial investment from Airbus will help us expand our company, increase SAF production and deployment, and advance our efforts to meet aviation’s decarbonization goals and foster a more sustainable industry."
LanzaJet’s technology converts low-carbon ethanol into SAF, which cuts greenhouse gas emissions by over 70% compared to fossil fuels on a lifecycle basis, with potential for even greater reductions using various carbon reduction technologies. SAF made with LanzaJet’s ATJ technology is an approved drop-in fuel, compatible with existing aircraft engines and infrastructure.
LanzaJet is now launching the world’s first commercial-scale ethanol-to-SAF production at LanzaJet Freedom Pines Fuels. Situated in the United States, this facility will produce SAF and renewable diesel from low-carbon, sustainable ethanol and will serve as a model for scaling SAF production. With projects across 25 countries and 5 continents, LanzaJet is advancing global ethanol-to-jet production and collaborating with key stakeholders throughout the SAF value chain.
LanzaJet is a prominent sustainable fuels technology company focused on accelerating the clean energy transition. As a provider and producer of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) with its patented ethanol-based alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) technology, LanzaJet is paving the way for future generations by advancing the deployment of SAF and other essential clean technologies needed to tackle the climate crisis and reshape the global economy. LanzaJet was recently recognized in TIME's 100 Most Influential Companies for 2024.
