Adnoc and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. have formalized a strategic collaboration agreement aimed at advancing low-carbon energy supply chains and promoting carbon-neutral solutions within the energy sector.

This partnership further solidifies the enduring strategic energy ties between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Japan. Adnoc and MHI are poised to synergize efforts in expediting the development of hydrogen and ammonia businesses, alongside initiatives supporting global net-zero emission endeavors, as stated in individual press releases issued by the two entities on Friday. Additionally, they express an interest in exploring the application of carbon management technologies.

Musabbeh Al Kaabi, Adnoc's Executive Director for Low Carbon Solutions and International Growth, emphasized the potential benefits of aligning Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' technologies with Adnoc's assets. He stated that this collaboration goes beyond the assessment of opportunities in hydrogen and ammonia value chains, aiming to uncover synergies that could significantly benefit Adnoc and the broader new energies ecosystem. Al Kaabi highlighted the combined expertise and commitment to advancing carbon-neutral technologies, underscoring the potential to expedite Adnoc's journey to achieving net-zero emissions by 2045.

MHI's Senior Executive Vice President, Hitoshi Kaguchi, responsible for energy transition and the expansion of growth fields, expressed honor in collaborating with a leading company dedicated to decarbonizing challenging industrial sectors. Kaguchi looks forward to contributing to Adnoc's net-zero ambitions through the reliable technology provided in forthcoming projects under this strategic agreement.

Under this collaboration, MHI assumes the role of a technology solution provider, offering support for the decarbonization of Adnoc's oil and gas production sites. MHI also commits to contributing to the development of businesses focusing on the production of blue hydrogen and blue ammonia, while simultaneously generating global demand for these resources.

Adnoc has been actively engaging in partnerships for clean energy initiatives in recent months. The company has expanded its strategic energy alliances along the hydrogen value chain and successfully shipped demonstration cargoes of low-carbon ammonia to customers in Asia and Germany. In a notable development last week, Adnoc and the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) inked an agreement to collaborate on potential low-carbon energy technology development. The agreement encompasses joint exploration of opportunities in advancing blue hydrogen, carbon management, and geothermal technologies to accelerate energy system decarbonization in the UAE, Azerbaijan, and other key markets.

Earlier collaborations include a partnership between Adnoc and Australia's Santos Ltd to develop a joint global carbon management platform. This collaboration seeks to advance carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies and explore the creation of a carbon dioxide shipping and transportation infrastructure network. Furthermore, in October, Adnoc subsidiary 1PointFive and Occidental collaborated on a preliminary engineering study for a one-million-ton-per-year direct air capture (DAC) facility in the UAE. This study assesses the feasibility of constructing a megaton-scale DAC facility, utilizing the same carbon dioxide extraction technology deployed in a plant in Ector County, Texas, by 1PointFive, an Occidental subsidiary.
