ABB, a global technology leader in electrification and automation, has been selected by DS Smith Paper Italia S.r.l to supply a new sectional drives system for their forthcoming containerboard machine at the Lucca Paper Mill in Porcari in Tuscany, Italy. This significant project will make the mill the biggest of its kind in Italy. They made the announcement on November 4, 2024 via a presser released on their website.
The new line, known as Paper Machine 3 (PM3), will nearly double production capacity at the Lucca Paper Mill and play a key role in Italy's paper production industry. With an estimated annual capacity of 450,000 metric tons, PM3 will focus on recycled liner grades.
ABB's involvement stems from their proven experience and reliable products in the pulp and paper sector. Their drive systems have been implemented in over 3,000 mills worldwide, and DS Smith specifically chose ABB for PM3 due to the anticipated improvements in performance, energy savings, and product quality.
ABB's solution contributes to DS Smith's sustainability goals by reducing energy consumption. The system allows for precise control, leading to superior product quality.
The PMC800 drive system promises faster start-ups, high reliability, and seamless integration with existing mill automation. This translates to lower lifecycle costs and improved control precision.
Technical Specifications:
• The machine will be 8.6 meters wide and produce recycled liner grades with a basis weight range of 70 to 135 grams per square meter.
• Production speed is expected to reach 1,500 meters per minute (m/min) with a mechanical design speed of 1,700 m/min.
Massimo Basta, General Manager at DS Smith's Lucca Paper Mill, highlights the project's impact: "This project will significantly increase production capacity and improve energy efficiency at our plant in Porcari. The successful integration of PM3 will make a substantial difference to paper production in Italy, providing the high-performing paper needed for the growing demand for sustainable packaging worldwide."
Jan-Willem Bos, Paper Europe Sales Manager at ABB, expresses his pride in the collaboration: "It is a moment of great pride for ABB to partner with DS Smith on this major project. Customers recognize ABB as a leader in the pulp and paper industry, and we are committed to achieving production and sustainability goals for our partners. This project exemplifies the outstanding cooperation between our various departments."
