US: CF Industries Holdings, Inc., the biggest global producer of Ammonia, and NextEra Energy Resources, LLC, the top global renewable energy generator from wind and solar, and a leader in battery storage, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish a joint venture. The goal is to create a Hydrogen project with zero Carbon intensity at CF Industries' Verdigris Complex in Oklahoma.
The HALO Hydrogen Hub, a collaborative effort between Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma, submitted a funding application to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) this month proposing a new project. CF Industries and NextEra Energy Resources are hopeful that the DOE's regional clean Hydrogen hub program will provide financial support for the project. However, it is worth noting that a final investment decision has not yet been reached.
A new project is in the works for a jointly owned electrolysis plant with a capacity of 100 MW at the Verdigris Complex. The dedicated 450-MW renewable energy facility developed by NextEra Energy Resources will power this plant. CF Industries will be the sole recipient of the zero-Carbon green Hydrogen output (100%) generated by the electrolyzers.
The green Hydrogen produced will facilitate the production of zero-Carbon green Ammonia- targeting 100,000 tons per year- by performing debottlenecking at Verdigris’ Ammonia plants. With this project, CF Industries aims to support the transition of American agriculture to low- and zero-Carbon fertilizers. Moreover, the production of green Ammonia is expected to eliminate up to 130,000 metric tons of Carbon Dioxide emissions from the agriculture supply chain each year.
The agriculture industry can significantly reduce the Carbon footprint of the food we consume using decarbonized Ammonia. This approach can offer quantifiable and verifiable outcomes to cut down on Carbon emissions. In collaboration with NextEra Energy Resources, there are efforts to explore green Hydrogen 's potential to accelerate the deployment of low and zero-Carbon Ammonia and Nitrogen fertilizers in the United States.
This will help decarbonize the agriculture supply chain in a concrete manner. The commitment of NextEra Energy Resources towards leading the decarbonization of the American economy extends to key sectors, such as agriculture. A partnership with CF Industries is in place to introduce green Hydrogen production to the Verdigris Complex, which will generate more employment opportunities and economic benefits for Oklahoma.
