Wood plc, headquartered in Aberdeen, Scotland, has been designated as the owner's engineer for a significant green hydrogen production initiative located in Teruel, Spain. This pioneering endeavor, known as the Catalina Project, is spearheaded by a consortium led by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, operating through its Copenhagen Infrastructure Energy Transition Fund I K/S. The project is poised to integrate 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of wind and solar energy sources to power a 500-megawatt (MW) electrolyzer, thereby facilitating the production of green hydrogen.

In its capacity as the owner's engineer, Wood will assume a pivotal role as the technical authority overseeing the development of Catalina's green hydrogen generation plant. This responsibility encompasses various facets, including technology selection, preliminary studies, front-end engineering and design (FEED), as well as providing support for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) tendering processes. The scale and complexity of this initiative underline its status as a groundbreaking endeavor within the realm of large-scale green hydrogen production.

The Catalina project is poised to generate a substantial volume of green hydrogen, equivalent to satisfying approximately 15% of Spain's current demand for hydrogen. Beyond its immediate impact on the national energy landscape, Catalina holds the potential to elevate Spain's stature as a global leader in green hydrogen innovation. The hydrogen produced by the facility is earmarked to cater to the needs of local, regional, and national industries, thereby playing a crucial role in the decarbonization efforts within hard-to-abate sectors such as fertilizer and petrochemicals. Furthermore, the project aligns with both Spanish and European targets for renewable hydrogen deployment, thereby contributing significantly to the broader goals of sustainable energy transition.

Wood expresses profound pride in being entrusted by its partners to assume a leading technical role in the Catalina Project. The project's ambitious scope and pioneering nature position it as a trailblazer in the realm of large-scale green hydrogen production endeavors, setting a benchmark for similar initiatives worldwide. Leveraging Wood's specialized expertise in hydrogen technologies and its proven track record in delivering complex projects, Catalina aims to set new standards for innovation and excellence in the field of renewable energy.

The collaboration between Wood and its partners underscores a strategic synergy, combining Wood's profound understanding of hydrogen technologies with its robust engineering capabilities in the region. This partnership not only enhances Wood's portfolio in the domain of hydrogen-related projects but also solidifies its reputation as a preferred partner for initiatives focused on industrial decarbonization and sustainable energy transition.

The execution of the Catalina Project will be facilitated by Wood's dedicated consulting and projects teams, operating across Spain and the United Kingdom. Their collective expertise and collaborative approach will be instrumental in navigating the intricate challenges inherent in such a transformative initiative, ensuring the successful realization of Catalina's ambitious objectives.
