On January 24, Wanhua Chemical announced the successful completion and acceptance of two major projects, significantly enhancing its production capabilities. These projects include a 1.8 million tons/year MDI technical transformation project and a 180,000 tons/year hexamethylenediamine project.

1.8 Million Tons/Year MDI Technical Transformation Project

With a total investment of 941 million yuan, including 77.7 million yuan allocated for environmental protection, this project involves:

  • Construction of a new 280,000 tons/year modified MDI unit
  • A new 180,000 tons/year hexamethylenediamine unit
  • Upgrades to the existing MDI units, including the first-phase unit increasing from 500,000 tons/year to 600,000 tons/year and the second-phase unit expanding from 1 million tons/year to 1.2 million tons/year
  • Expansion of the hydrogen chloride oxidation unit and upgrades to the existing gasification unit

Following implementation, Wanhua Chemical's total MDI production capacity will increase from 1.5 million tons/year to 1.8 million tons/year, with modified MDI capacity rising from 20,000 tons/year to 300,000 tons/year. The hexamethylenediamine production capacity will be 180,000 tons/year.

The project commenced in September 2022 and was completed in April 2024, with most units operational, except for the hydrogen chloride oxidation unit, which is pending expansion. The initial acceptance process has been completed.

Hexamethylenediamine Production Expansion and HDI Capacity Growth

A separate project, with a total investment of 323 million yuan (including 209.9 million yuan for environmental protection), focused on expanding hexamethylenediamine and HDI production. Key developments include:

  • Transformation of the existing first- and second-phase MDI units
  • Construction of a new 50,000 tons/year second-phase HDI unit
  • Establishment of a new 240,000 tons/year formaldehyde unit
  • Construction of a 120,000 tons/year hydrogen chloride oxidation unit (a second planned unit was canceled)

Upon completion, Wanhua’s MDI production capacity increased from 1.2 million tons/year to 1.5 million tons/year, with HDI capacity doubling from 50,000 tons/year to 100,000 tons/year. This project began in March 2022 and concluded in April 2024, with all facilities undergoing successful commissioning. The company also reapplied for its pollutant discharge permit in April 2024, ensuring environmental compliance.

Ningbo Wanhua's Functional Plastics Project

Additionally, Ningbo Wanhua is in the final stages of commissioning a modified functional plastics project, with an annual capacity of 150,000 tons. The project received its environmental protection acceptance notice on November 25, 2024, and will produce:

  • 50,000 tons/year of modified polypropylene (PP)
  • 80,000 tons/year of modified polycarbonate (PC)
  • 20,000 tons/year of modified nylon (PA)

With these major developments, Wanhua Chemical continues to solidify its position as a leading chemical producer, enhancing its production capabilities while ensuring sustainable environmental practices.
