Vulcan Energy Resources Ltd., a leading geothermal lithium company, and the City of Landau have formalized their partnership with the signing of an option agreement. This strategic move solidifies the groundwork for the construction of an integrated geothermal and lithium plant in Landau, Germany.

The proposed plant is poised to revolutionize the region's energy landscape by providing climate-neutral heat and sustainable lithium for battery production. The project aligns seamlessly with the global shift towards renewable energy sources and sustainable technologies.

The option agreement secures the property in the D12 development plan in the City of Landau, paving the way for the construction of the geothermal and lithium plant. This development follows the recent approval of the D12 development plan in June 2024 and the significant state funding commitment of up to €100 million for Vulcan's Heat4Landau Project.

The City of Landau Mayor, Dominik Geißler, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “The planned plant will provide green heat for the City of Landau and create economic impetus for the region. We are pleased that we, as the southern Palatinate metropolis, are leading the way.”

The project is expected to generate numerous benefits for the region. The geothermal plant will provide climate-neutral heat to Landau's households, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and significantly lowering carbon emissions. The plant will extract lithium from geothermal brine, a sustainable and environmentally friendly process, contributing to the European battery industry's growth.

The project will create new jobs and stimulate economic growth in the region. Landau will become a pioneer in sustainable technologies. It will attract investment and foster innovation.

Vulcan's commitment to sustainable energy and lithium production is further underscored by its long-term offtake agreements with industry leaders like Stellantis, Renault, LG, and Umicore. These partnerships ensure a robust market for the lithium produced at the Landau plant.

Thorsten Weimann, Chief Development Officer of Vulcan, emphasized the significance of the option agreement, stating, “The signing of the option agreement is another milestone in the realization of our project in Landau. This agreement underlines the close cooperation with the Landau City and the joint commitment to a sustainable future.”

The partnership between Vulcan Energy and the City of Landau marks a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable future. The integrated geothermal and lithium plant will not only benefit the region but also contribute to global efforts to combat climate change and transition to a low-carbon economy.
