Versalis, the petrochemical arm of Italy's Eni SpA, finds itself in the midst of unscheduled repairs as it has decided to temporarily close down its polyethylene (PE) plant in Brindisi, Italy. The impetus for this unexpected shutdown was a fire that erupted at the Brindisi plant, specifically impacting the ethylene production area. The repercussions of this incident led to the suspension of two lines, each boasting a substantial capacity of 550 thousand tons of polyethylene (PE) per year. While repair efforts are already underway, the completion date remains uncertain.

This is not the first instance of Versalis grappling with unplanned maintenance. Previously, the petrochemical division of Italy's Eni SpA faced a similar situation at its cracker in Dunkerque, Germany. After undergoing unscheduled repairs, production at the Dunkerque facility resumed on May 19. The catalyst for this interruption was an unforeseen fire that prompted the initiation of unscheduled maintenance on December 9, 2022. The affected cracking unit, with a capacity of 380 thousand tons of ethylene and 95 thousand tons of propylene per year, required diligent attention to restore normal operations. Notably, supplies of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) experienced growth during this period.

Versalis, as a dedicated petrochemical entity, operates as a 100% subsidiary of the renowned Italian oil and gas company, Eni SpA. The company has positioned itself as a key player in the global petrochemical landscape, thereby producing an extensive range of petrochemical products. Notably, Versalis has also carved a niche as one of the leading elastomer companies across the world, thereby contributing to the diverse portfolio within the Eni SpA umbrella.

Eni SpA, officially known as Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi, stands as a prominent Italian oil and gas company with its headquarters in Rome. With a global footprint, Eni operates in 70 countries, solidifying its presence and influence in the international energy sector.

The unforeseen fire incident at Versalis' Brindisi plant has prompted the temporary closure of its polyethylene (PE) production facility for urgent repairs. This development is part of a broader narrative, considering Versalis' recent encounter with unscheduled maintenance at its Dunkerque facility. The polyethylene market dynamics in Russia indicate substantial growth, underscoring the importance of Versalis' strategic role in meeting the evolving demands of the petrochemical landscape. As repairs are underway, the completion timeline remains uncertain, and Versalis continues to navigate challenges with resilience, thereby leveraging its expertise within the expansive Eni SpA network.
