Antonio Sieira, CEO of IGNIS, together with Carlos Mazón, President of the Generalitat of Valencia, the Mayor of Castellón City Council, and the President of the Port Authority, have signed a memorandum of understanding showing commitment to developing a project for processing and storing green Hydrogen and Ammonia from renewable sources in Castelló de la Plana.

The project, spanning three phases, aims to produce up to 800,000 tonnes/year of Green Ammonia, primarily for industrial decarbonization across Europe. With a total investment exceeding 1.4 billion euros across the phases, the entire project is slated for completion by around 2031, creating approximately 100 direct jobs and around 1,200 indirect employment opportunities.

The proposed production unit, strategically located adjacent to the Port of Castellón, will serve as a crucial hub for generating and converting hydrogen into ammonia, poised to revolutionize the region's renewable energy landscape. Complementing this facility, storage infrastructure for green ammonia within the port area will facilitate seamless international distribution via maritime routes, enhancing global accessibility to sustainable energy sources. This visionary initiative, driven by innovative energy vectors, is forecasted to avert over 2 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, marking a significant milestone in combating climate change. Beyond its environmental impact, the project promises multifaceted benefits, including bolstering commercial competitiveness, fostering economic growth, and catalyzing social advancement. Positioned as a catalyst for transformative change, it is poised to ignite a value-added chain within the strategic renewable energy sector, amplifying its ripple effects across the Valencian Community, Spain, and the broader European landscape. By championing sustainable practices and pioneering technological innovation, this endeavor stands as a beacon of progress, exemplifying the collective commitment towards a greener, more resilient future for generations to come.

Carlos Mazón emphasized that the initiative solidifies Castellón's pivotal position as a national frontrunner in green energy, furthering the goal of energy sovereignty within the Valencian Community. By focusing on generating the energy consumed locally, the initiative not only aligns with efforts to reduce carbon emissions but also promotes sustainability. Mazón's remarks underscore the significance of regional efforts towards achieving broader environmental objectives, emphasizing the need for localized energy production to mitigate reliance on external sources and enhance control over energy consumption patterns. This initiative reflects a strategic shift towards sustainable energy practices, positioning Castellón as a key player in the national landscape of renewable energy development. Through fostering innovation and investment in green technologies, Castellón aims to establish itself as a model for other regions aspiring to transition towards cleaner, more sustainable energy systems. By championing energy sovereignty, the region seeks to assert greater autonomy over its energy infrastructure, reducing dependency on non-renewable sources while simultaneously contributing to the global fight against climate change.
