The United States government has imposed sanctions on four companies for their involvement in the transport of Iranian petroleum. This action, taken by the Department of Treasury and State, targets several entities and vessels engaged in facilitating the trade of Iranian oil and petrochemicals, which are a significant source of revenue for the Iranian regime.

The Treasury Department stated that Iran relies heavily on a clandestine network of vessels, companies, and intermediaries to circumvent international sanctions and finance its nuclear program, weapons proliferation, and support for proxy groups. These sanctions aim to disrupt this network and limit Iran's access to critical revenue streams.

Among the sanctioned are Atlantic Navigation OPC Private Limited, an Indian company, for its role as the ISM (International Safety Management) manager of the vessel VIGOR, which has been involved in transporting Iranian petroleum. This designation subjects the company to US sanctions, potentially impacting its financial transactions and business operations.

In addition to Atlantic Navigation, the US has also sanctioned three other companies Shiny Sails Shipping Limited from Seychelles, involved in the purchase and transport of Iranian petroleum; Galaxy Management NV Suriname France, also involved in the transport of Iranian petroleum; and Brecalin Hong Kong Company Limited from Hong Kong, engaged in transactions related to the sale and marketing of Iranian petroleum products.

Furthermore, six vessels have been identified as blocked property, including the AVITAL (Cameroon-flagged), VIGOR (Panama-flagged), PROGRESS V, SCORPIUS (both Barbados-flagged), and TASCA and ELIZA II (both Panama-flagged). These vessels are believed to be connected to the sanctioned entities and involved in the illicit transport of Iranian oil.

Human Rights Concerns

The US State Department also designated Ghezel Hesar Prison in Iran as responsible for gross human rights violations, including the cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment of individuals who exercise their right to freedom of expression. This designation aligns with the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).

Impact of Sanctions

The imposed sanctions are expected to significantly impact the financial operations of the designated entities and limit their access to the US financial system. They also aim to deter other actors from engaging in similar activities that support the Iranian regime.

US Stance on Iran

This action underscores the US government's continued efforts to counter Iran's destabilizing activities and restrict its access to revenue sources that fund its nuclear program and support for terrorism. The US has consistently maintained a strong stance against Iran's nuclear ambitions and its support for regional conflicts.
