Trinseo, a global materials company and a leader in sustainable solutions, announced on November 1 that it has been granted a U.S. patent for its innovative dissolution-based polymer recycling technology. This significant milestone underscores Trinseo's commitment to driving circularity and reducing the environmental impact of plastic waste.

Traditional mechanical recycling methods often struggle with mixed and contaminated plastic waste streams, limiting the quality and quantity of recycled materials. Trinseo's dissolution-based technology addresses these challenges by selectively dissolving specific polymers from complex waste mixtures like dyes, resulting in high-quality recycled materials suitable for various applications.

Dissolution-based recycling offers several advantages. It can process a wider range of plastic waste, including mixed and contaminated materials. This subsequently improves recycling capabilities. This recycling technology produces high-quality recycled polymers with properties similar to virgin materials. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions and minimizing reliance on fossil fuels, it significantly reduces environmental impact. It can reduce up to 80% CO2 equivalent emissions, making it quite the environment friendly recycling option. Additionally, it promotes a circular economy by recovering valuable materials from waste streams.

Trinseo's patented technology empowers partners in the toys, consumer electronics, and automotive industries. This will help in industries to embrace circularity and reduce their carbon footprint. By licensing the technology, Trinseo aims to foster collaboration and accelerate the adoption of sustainable recycling solutions.

Han Hendriks, CTO and CSO of Trinseo, commented, "This patent is a testament to our dedication to innovation and sustainability. It complements our ongoing efforts to develop and commercialize advanced recycling technologies. By working together with our partners, we can create a more sustainable future for plastics."

Trinseo is actively investing in sustainable solutions, including the recent inauguration of a PC-dissolution facility in Terneuzen, Netherlands, and the upcoming startup of an ABS dissolution-recycling pilot in the same location. Additionally, the company operates a PMMA depolymerization facility in Rho, Italy. These initiatives demonstrate Trinseo's leadership in driving the transition to a circular economy.

By pioneering groundbreaking technologies like dissolution-based recycling, Trinseo is shaping a more sustainable future for the plastics industry and beyond.
