TotalEnergies has finalized its investment decision for a 100 MW/200 MWh battery storage project in Dahlem, North Rhine-Westphalia. This project is the first to be approved from Kyon Energy’s pipeline, a leading German battery storage system developer that TotalEnergies acquired in February 2024.

The project, with a total investment exceeding €75 million, will leverage the expertise of Saft, TotalEnergies' battery affiliate, which will supply the latest-generation electricity storage technology (iShift LFP — lithium-iron-phosphate — containers). Commercial operations are anticipated to commence in the second half of 2026. Quadra Energy, a top renewable power aggregator in Germany that TotalEnergies acquired in October 2023, will manage the marketing of the flexibility offered by these batteries.

"This investment decision underscores the rapid progress of our integrated development in Germany's electricity market, the largest in Europe. We will leverage synergies within our electricity teams for the battery system design: Saft will supply the batteries, Kyon Energy will oversee development, and Quadra Energy will market this new capacity,” stated Stéphane Michel, SVP, Gas, Renewables & Power at TotalEnergies. “Our recent investments in Germany underscore our firm commitment to advancing the decarbonization of the nation's electricity and industrial sectors.”

In 2023 and 2024, TotalEnergies secured two significant marine leases in Germany for the development of wind farms with a combined capacity of 4.5 GW, enough to supply green electricity to approximately 4.5 million households. Concurrently, TotalEnergies acquired several German electricity companies to enhance and streamline its integrated development in this market:

• NASH Renewables: Acquired in October 2023, this company focuses on optimizing the design and operational parameters of renewable projects.

• Quadra Energy: Also acquired in October 2023, Quadra Energy is one of the top three aggregators of renewable electricity production in Germany, managing a "virtual power plant" with a total capacity of 9 GW.

• Kyon Energy: acquired in February 2024, is working on a 2 GW pipeline of battery storage systems in Germany..

Additionally, in 2023, TotalEnergies won a contract to install and operate 1,100 high-power recharging points for electric vehicles across the country.

In pursuit of its goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, TotalEnergies is building a top-tier, cost-effective portfolio that combines renewables (solar, onshore, and offshore wind) with flexible assets (CCGT and storage) to deliver dependable, clean power to its customers. By the end of 2023, TotalEnergies' installed capacity for gross renewable electricity generation stood at 22 GW. The company plans to expand this capacity to 35 GW by 2025 and aims to exceed 100 TWh of net electricity production by 2030.

TotalEnergies is a global integrated energy company engaged in the production and marketing of various energy sources, including oil and biofuels, natural gas and green gases, renewables, and electricity. With over 100,000 employees dedicated to delivering energy that is reliable, affordable, and sustainable, the company operates in approximately 120 countries. TotalEnergies prioritizes sustainability at the core of its strategy, projects, and operations.
