TotalEnergies Corbion is at the forefront of sustainable innovation with Luminy® Polylactic Acid (PLA), tapping into its largely unexplored potential for durable, high-performance applications. While PLA has been traditionally utilized in products like food packaging and 3D printing, its capabilities are now being recognized in more demanding injection molding applications. At Fakuma 2024, a premier trade fair for industrial plastics processing, TotalEnergies Corbion will highlight how their research and development teams are enhancing Luminy® PLA to address the increasing demands of consumers and brand owners.

Historically linked to single-use packaging, PLA is evolving to meet the requirements of durable goods. This transformation is driven by advancements in Luminy® PLA’s heat resistance, mechanical strength, and weatherability through innovative compounding techniques. These enhancements make Luminy® PLA an ideal choice for robust applications such as cosmetic jars, electronic components, and dishwasher-safe products. Furthermore, the introduction of flame-retardant and high-impact-resistant Luminy® PLA compounds is expanding its applicability in technically challenging areas where safety and durability are critical.

Seda Cantekin, Global Segment Leader at TotalEnergies Corbion, emphasizes that the durable applications of Luminy® PLA align with global sustainability initiatives. Since it is made from renewable resources, Luminy® PLA has a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to traditional plastics such as ABS, PS, or PP. Additionally, Luminy® PLA can be processed using standard methods like injection molding, facilitating a seamless transition to eco-friendly alternatives without sacrificing performance.

At Fakuma 2024, TotalEnergies Corbion will showcase Luminy® PLA in various durable applications for the medical and healthcare sectors. Attendees can expect to see items such as FDA-approved biobased pill bottles from Innovative Bottles and medical instruments from Bridea Medical. These products contribute to closed-loop recycling models that enhance the circular economy, supporting environmental sustainability within these essential industries.

In addition to durable applications, TotalEnergies Corbion will present advancements in 3D printing and nonwoven applications at this year’s Fakuma event. For more insights into their innovative offerings, visit TotalEnergies Corbion at Fakuma 2024, taking place from October 15th to 19th. They will be co-exhibiting with their distribution partner, Nordmann, in Hall 5 at booth B5-5214.

TotalEnergies Corbion is a global leader in promoting sustainable innovation with Poly Lactic Acid (PLA), working to reduce carbon footprints while enhancing circularity. The biobased and compostable characteristics of PLA contribute to a lower carbon footprint and support the circular economy through both mechanical and chemical recycling. Based in the Netherlands, this 50/50 joint venture between TotalEnergies and Corbion operates a state-of-the-art PLA production facility in Rayong, Thailand. By applying PLA across diverse industries and fostering collaboration throughout the value chain, TotalEnergies Corbion aims to accelerate the adoption of bioplastics, envisioning a future where it transforms industries and contributes to a healthier planet.
