Toray Advanced Composites Acquires Colorado-Based Thermoplastics Manufacturer

Toray Advanced Composites, a leader in advanced material technologies, has announced a strategic expansion of its continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composite materials through the acquisition of assets, technology, and intellectual property from Gordon Plastics, based in Englewood, Colorado. This acquisition enables Toray to increase its development, testing, and production capabilities for continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic unidirectional tapes, particularly enhancing its ability to handle high-temperature polymer systems.

The acquisition includes a 47,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art production facility near Denver, Colorado, which will now function as a satellite R&D and production hub under Toray Advanced Composites. With this facility, Toray gains expanded resources and expertise to support growing demands in sectors such as sporting goods, oil and gas, and various industrial applications. Additionally, the seasoned team from Gordon Plastics has joined Toray, bringing valuable experience and production knowledge to help accelerate the company’s market growth.

Steve Cease, Chief Technology Officer and U.S. Managing Director at Toray Advanced Composites, emphasized the strategic importance of the acquisition: "This move significantly strengthens Toray Advanced Composites’ role in developing and supplying continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites. The Englewood facility is ready to deliver an extensive product range of continuous fiber-reinforced composite tapes. These products are available with various high-performance matrix options, including PEI (Ultem™), PPS, PES, PESU, PA6, and PA11, reinforced by diverse glass and carbon fiber types. Toray’s sales and technical teams are equipped to provide comprehensive support to customers, offering information on material samples, product availability, pricing, and technical specifications to meet specific project requirements.

This acquisition marks a crucial step for Toray Advanced Composites, reinforcing its position in the thermoplastic composites market and enhancing its ability to serve emerging demands with innovative materials and rapid response capabilities.
