Topsoe, renowned for its expertise in carbon emission reduction technologies, ABB, a leader in electrification and automation technology, and Fluor, a prominent provider of engineering, procurement, and construction services, have joined forces to develop a standardized concept for constructing Topsoe’s upcoming SOEC factory.

The goal is to continually improve processes to lower expenses, improve safety, and ensure efficient project execution through a standardized approach.

The momentum behind green hydrogen projects is increasing, with potential for significant production growth by 2030 if all announced projects materialize. According to the International Energy Agency's (IEA) Global Hydrogen Review 2023, annual hydrogen production could reach 38 million tonnes by 2030, with nearly 75 percent sourced from electrolyzers powered by renewable energy.

Topsoe is presently constructing its inaugural SOEC factory in Herning, Denmark, slated for operation by late 2024. Drawing from the experience gained from the Herning factory project, the alliance aims to construct the next factory more efficiently and using a standardized approach.

Pending a final investment decision, the next factory is planned for construction in Chesterfield, Virginia, with an anticipated operational start by 2028.

Kim Hedegaard, CEO of Power-to-X at Topsoe, stated: "We are dedicated to leading the charge in advancing the energy transition. E-fuels are crucial for achieving global net zero emissions by 2050, and there is a pressing need to accelerate the scaling of electrolyzer capacity and e-fuels production beyond current rates. Our SOEC solutions for green hydrogen production can significantly bolster the e-fuels sector, and through this alliance, we aim to construct our next SOEC factory more efficiently and swiftly."

Brandon Spencer, President of ABB Energy Industries, expressed: "Advancing the energy transition at a viable pace and scale necessitates collaboration and integration of existing and emerging technologies, facilitated by formal partnerships spanning the entire energy value chain. Through our collaboration with Topsoe and Fluor, leveraging our automation and electrical expertise, we aim to scale technology deployment to facilitate society's journey towards a net-zero future."

Richard Meserole, President of Fluor's Advanced Technologies & Life Sciences business, commented: "Fluor is honored to participate in this collaboration aimed at advancing the cutting-edge production of electrolyzers for green hydrogen as part of the worldwide energy transformation. Fluor remains committed to assisting our clients and partners in reaching their decarbonization objectives."

Topsoe's SOEC electrolysis technology features a modular design capable of operating at substantially higher temperatures than other electrolyzer technologies. This tested and validated process enables the large-scale production of green hydrogen using renewable electricity.

When integrated with waste heat from subsequent production processes such as ammonia, methanol, or steel production, Topsoe’s SOEC technology yields higher hydrogen output per unit of total power input compared to traditional electrolyzer technologies. This capability also ensures the lowest levelized cost of hydrogen per megawatt volume across various industries.
