thyssenkrupp Uhde, a leading provider of chemical technology solutions, has secured a significant contract from Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers & Chemicals Ltd. (GNFC) to develop a new Weak Nitric Acid (WNA - III) Plant in Bharuch, Gujarat, India. The comprehensive scope of the project covers licensing, basic and detailed engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and start-up services.
Utilizing thyssenkrupp Uhde’s cutting-edge technology, the plant is designed with a strong emphasis on operational efficiency, safety, and sustainability. It will have a production capacity of 600 metric tons per day (MTPD) of weak nitric acid. As one of India’s largest nitric acid production facilities, the plant will integrate Uhde’s advanced EnviNOx® technology to minimize environmental impact by significantly reducing nitrogen oxide emissions, a key contributor to greenhouse gases.
The collaboration between thyssenkrupp Uhde and GNFC extends over three decades, marked by numerous successful projects in the nitric acid sector. Previously, thyssenkrupp Uhde provided licensing for GNFC’s WNA - I and WNA - II plants. This long-standing partnership, built on trust and technical expertise, continues to evolve with the launch of the WNA - III project.
Dr. T. Natarajan, IAS, Managing Director of GNFC, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, stating, “We are pleased to further strengthen our position in the Weak Nitric Acid market in India with the installation of a new plant powered by thyssenkrupp Uhde’s technology. Currently, we operate two nitric acid plants licensed by thyssenkrupp Uhde, and this third plant will boost our capacity while fulfilling downstream requirements. This initiative aligns with the ‘Make in India’ campaign and underscores our commitment to environmental conservation.”
Nadja Håkansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde, also highlighted the importance of this project, saying, “We are thrilled to deepen our collaboration with GNFC and support their expansion goals. With our globally recognized technologies and project execution expertise, we contribute to sustainable fertilizer production that ensures food security for millions while reducing emissions.”
The execution of the project will be managed by thyssenkrupp Uhde’s Indian subsidiary, a leading EPC and engineering consultancy firm with expertise across various sectors, including petrochemicals, refineries, fertilizers, and cryogenic storage solutions. With a track record of successfully delivering over 850 projects in the past four decades, the company continues to drive innovation and excellence in the industry.
