Taiwan Cement Corporation (TCC) has entered into a strategic partnership with Germany's thyssenkrupp Polysius to pioneer an innovative carbon capture solution, marking a significant step in Taiwan's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The collaboration was formalized through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU), emphasizing the joint efforts to address the challenging issue of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the cement and concrete sector, which accounts for approximately 8% of global emissions.

The focal point of this groundbreaking carbon capture project will be TCC's Hoping Plant, where the implementation of Separate Oxyfuel Calciner technology will take center stage. This cutting-edge technology involves introducing pure oxygen to the calcination process, elevating the CO2 capture concentration to an impressive level exceeding 90%. Notably, the utilization of Separate Oxyfuel Calciner technology not only enhances the efficiency of carbon capture but also results in a reduction in energy consumption, thereby contributing to the overall cost-effectiveness of the operation.

Recognizing the significance of the cement and concrete sector as one of the most challenging areas to mitigate CO2 emissions, the collaboration between TCC and thyssenkrupp Polysius represents a critical advancement in sustainable practices within the industry. The joint initiative aligns with the global imperative to address emissions from hard-to-abate sectors and signifies a commitment to developing solutions that transcend conventional boundaries.

As part of Taiwan's ambitious target to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, the carbon capture project at TCC's Hoping Plant is poised to play a pivotal role. The planned completion in 2026 sets the stage for significant milestones, with the joint venture anticipating the capture of more than 100,000 tons of CO2 annually by 2030. This ambitious goal underscores the proactive approach taken by TCC and thyssenkrupp Polysius in contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

The captured emissions from the project are anticipated to be utilized in various ways, offering flexibility in addressing environmental concerns. Possibilities include conversion into valuable products, permanent storage, or alignment with carbon credit schemes. This multifaceted approach reflects a comprehensive strategy to not only capture and reduce emissions but also explore innovative avenues for their responsible and sustainable utilization.

Mr. Nelson Chang, Chairman of TCC, expressed the company's commitment to participating in the energy transition and supporting the development of future civilizations. While acknowledging the pivotal role that cement has played in shaping modern society, Chang emphasized the need to address the associated greenhouse gas emissions. The collaboration with Polysius, a distinguished name in the cement industry, is viewed as a strategic partnership aimed at solving this environmental challenge.
