Taiwan Pioneers Sustainable Solutions and Circular Economy, Setting a Global Example

Taiwan proudly unveils groundbreaking advancements in sustainability and circular economy, solidifying its global leadership. The nation is making significant progress in reducing carbon footprints through innovative technologies and circular economy principles, aiming to minimize waste, maximize resource efficiency, and promote sustainable development.
Taiwan Excellence leads the way in recognizing and honoring companies that excel in sustainable manufacturing practices. These pioneering companies integrate energy-efficient processes, waste reduction techniques, and eco-friendly materials into their production lines.
For example, Acer has introduced its first eco-friendly laptop by employing a circular approach with recycled materials. By incorporating post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic, ocean-bound plastic (OBP), and recyclable packaging materials, Acer has reduced its dependence on virgin materials. The highlights include:
• The Aspire Vero laptop features an OceanGlass touchpad made from 100% OBP.
• Acer has integrated PCR materials into various product lines, including desktops, monitors, projectors, and accessories.
• By using 40% PCR materials in its laptop chassis, Acer has achieved a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to a chassis made from 100% virgin plastic.
• Up to 90% recycled paper is used for packaging, and 100% recycled paper pulp is used to make molded pulp cushion materials. The paper-based cushion can be repurposed as a nursery pot, extending the lifespan of packaging materials.
• Laptop bags and keyboard sheets are made from 100% recycled polyester.
• Over 30 million Acer devices have incorporated PCR plastic.
Similarly, DA.AI Technology is addressing the environmental burden caused by discarded plastic waste. They are making significant efforts to recycle trash and garbage both on land and in the ocean. DA.AI is focusing on innovative solutions for eco-blankets made from PET bottles and repurposing discarded clothes, which are otherwise incinerated in Taiwan. Highlights include:
• Targeting 100% recycled polyester in product design to address recycling challenges after product damage.
• Developing eco-zippers and eco-buttons made from recycled polyester to simplify the recycling process and improve quality.
• Classifying recycled raw materials into three grades: the highest level for eco-friendly yarns, the second level for eco-friendly plastic products, and the lowest level for eco-friendly wood plastic composite (WPC) used for flooring.
• Each recycled bottle results in a reduction of 63.4g of CO2.
• Over the years, tons of discarded leftover fabric have been successfully recycled.
James Huang, Chairman of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, stated, "In collaboration with TITA, our Go Green initiative seeks to showcase Taiwan's potential in the global sustainable green energy industry, contributing to environmental and economic sustainability goals worldwide. We invite social entrepreneurs, social workers, and students to submit their proposals for the Go Green with Taiwan project, aimed at achieving SDG goals."
