Tacloban City, the capital of Leyte, has taken a decisive step towards environmental sustainability with the implementation of ban on single-use plastics, including the festive buntings or banderitas traditionally used during fiesta celebrations. The ban has come into effect on January 1, as mandated by the Plastic and Styrofoam Packaging Regulation Ordinance. This ordinance was approved by the city council and received the official endorsement of Mayor Alfred Romualdez in 2023.
