On November 30, Kumho Tire made a significant announcement, revealing the formalization of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Synthos, a prominent European petrochemical group. This collaborative effort is directed towards the joint development of sustainable raw materials for tire manufacturing, marking a pivotal step in the quest for eco-friendly solutions within the industry.

The primary focus of this partnership revolves around a comprehensive project aimed at advancing the research and development of Neodymium Butadiene Rubber (NBR) using Bio-Butadiene (Bio-BD). The strategic intention behind this initiative is to broaden the utilization of environmentally conscious synthetic rubber in the tire manufacturing processes, aligning with global sustainability objectives.

Synthos, a key player with production bases strategically located in Germany, the Czech Republic, and Poland, brings a notable credential to the table. The company has been bestowed with ISCC+ certification from the European Union Renewable Energy Directive System for its portfolio. This certification underscores Synthos's commitment to sustainable practices and signifies its compliance with rigorous environmental standards.

In addition to its collaboration with Kumho Tire, Synthos has been actively engaging with tire manufacturers in initiatives aimed at minimizing environmental impact. Notably, the company is in the process of constructing a bio-butadiene manufacturing plant, scheduled for completion in 2027. This venture reflects a proactive approach to address the environmental challenges associated with traditional tire manufacturing and signifies a dedication to fostering sustainable alternatives.

Kumho Tire, on the other hand, brings its own track record of commitment to sustainability to the partnership. In 2022, the company achieved a notable milestone by developing a tire composed of 55% sustainable materials. This accomplishment positioned Kumho Tire as a frontrunner in integrating eco-friendly elements into tire production. The company's dedication to sustainable practices was further recognized in the 2023 ESG evaluation by the Korea ESG Standards Authority, where it secured an A-grade for its robust ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management practices.

Building upon its previous achievements, Kumho Tire has raised the bar in 2023 by successfully developing a tire comprised of 80% sustainable materials. This advancement not only demonstrates the company's continuous commitment to innovation but also signifies a substantial reduction in the reliance on traditional, non-renewable resources. Looking ahead, Kumho Tire has set ambitious targets, aiming to develop products exclusively using natural-based and recycled materials by the year 2045.

The joint venture between Kumho Tire and Synthos, as outlined in the MOU, emerges as a beacon of collaboration in an industry where sustainable practices are becoming increasingly paramount. By pooling their expertise, resources, and innovative capacities, the two companies aim to drive a paradigm shift towards greener and more environmentally responsible tire manufacturing.
