Syensqo has announced that its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets for 2030 have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). By 2030, the company aims to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% compared to its 2021 baseline, and to cut its Scope 3 emissions by 25%. This validation underscores Syensqo’s dedication to sustainability, climate action, and innovation. CEO Ilham Kadri expressed pride in the achievement, emphasizing that it reflects the company's commitment to scientific breakthroughs that contribute to a more sustainable and resilient world. "Our validated 2030 targets demonstrate our commitment to reducing GHG emissions across our operations and value chain. We are proud to lead the decarbonization of the industry, with a goal of carbon neutrality by 2040," Kadri said.
Syensqo’s targets align with a 1.5°C global warming trajectory, with the long-term aim of achieving carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040. The company plans to reduce emissions by at least 80% compared to 2021 and offset any remaining hard-to-abate emissions through high-integrity carbon credits. In addition, Syensqo is launching a Climate Pledge to engage its top 70 suppliers, which represent approximately 80% of the company’s GHG emissions from purchased raw materials. The pledge aims to foster sustainable value chains across Syensqo’s markets.
Titta Rosvall-Puplett, Syensqo’s Chief Sustainability Officer, highlighted the collaborative nature of the initiative, stating, "The Syensqo Climate Pledge emphasizes the importance of partnership and shared responsibility in tackling climate change. By working closely with our suppliers, we aim to drive positive change in the sector, offering lower-carbon solutions to customers and contributing to a more sustainable world."
Through the Climate Pledge, Syensqo will work with its suppliers to set roadmaps and milestones to reduce their carbon footprints, ensuring alignment with the company’s decarbonization efforts. Chief Procurement Officer Juan Carlos Fuenmayor noted that Syensqo is integrating raw material carbon footprints and Scope 3 impacts into its procurement processes and supplier allocations. The company will also appoint resources to support and challenge suppliers on their decarbonization journeys. "We aim to form strategic partnerships with suppliers committed to science-based targets in line with the 1.5°C trajectory," he added.
Syensqo’s sustainability policies, which guide its efforts to achieve sustainable growth, improve climate and nature outcomes, and enhance quality of life globally, are available on its Sustainability page. These policies demonstrate Syensqo’s commitment to embedding sustainability in its business practices and meeting stakeholder expectations for responsible corporate behavior.
