Suncor Energy Inc. reached a significant milestone in October, achieving record crude production from its wells in Alberta, primarily driven by gains at its Firebag oil sands site. According to data from the Alberta Energy Regulator, published on the Petrinex website, Suncor’s wells in the province produced approximately 284,000 barrels per day (bpd) last month. This marks a 14% increase from September and represents the highest output since 2018, when data tracking began. The Firebag site, a steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) operation, played a pivotal role in this achievement, with its production climbing by 2% to reach a record 251,000 bpd.
Suncor’s CEO, Richard Kruger, has frequently highlighted Firebag’s importance to the company’s long-term strategy. On a recent earnings call, Kruger referred to Firebag as a “rock star” operation, emphasizing its strategic value as Suncor navigates challenges in its oil sands portfolio. One major challenge is the impending decline in production from the Base Plant oil sands mine, which is projected to reach the end of its operational life within the next decade. Efforts to extend the Base Plant’s lifespan through a federal government-approved project were unsuccessful, intensifying the need for Suncor to optimize production at its other assets.
Firebag has consistently demonstrated its value, achieving record production levels in five months of 2024 alone. Kruger expressed confidence in Firebag’s ability to support Suncor’s production targets, stating, “We’ll continue to get more out of this rock star of a Firebag.” He also noted that the company is exploring additional opportunities to enhance Firebag’s performance, citing the site’s ability to deliver reliable and increasing output. While Suncor plans to partially compensate for the loss of Base Plant output by expanding operations at the Fort Hills mine, Firebag remains central to the company’s strategy.
The data on Suncor’s production includes gross output from sites operated by the company, excluding contributions from non-operated facilities. It also excludes production from oil sands mines, focusing instead on SAGD and other oil sands well sites. As with all regulatory data, the figures are subject to future revisions.
Firebag’s exceptional performance underscores its crucial role in Suncor’s portfolio. As the company adapts to changing market conditions and regulatory landscapes, the site’s consistent growth positions it as a cornerstone of Suncor’s oil sands operations. With record-setting production levels and ongoing optimization efforts, Firebag continues to play a vital role in securing Suncor’s future in the energy sector.
